When I was a child, about 40 years ago (yes, I am old), I caught a carp. I was very proud of catching this large fish, but a man fishing nearby warned my father there is a trick to cooking carp: get a cedar plank and put the carp on it, marinade it with lemon, salt, soy sauce, a bit of honey for 24 hours, then cook it in a hibachi once the charcoal has burned down from black to ashy-white. Once the carp has stopped steaming, take it off the heat, let rest for five minutes.

Then throw away the carp and eat the plank.

While this is an old joke, it also actually happened - the guy who was fishing had it before and got a real kick out of telling it to someone who had just caught a carp. IIRC, I cried and we threw it back.
