MYST... even the name is a perfect representation of what this game was... simple, evocative, and BIG.

The game itself isn't actually all that big, but its impact on the gaming world was. In a time when Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D were the kings of computer gaming, and DOOM just around the corner... Cyan made a game your mom could play. There was no blood, there was no shooting, and you could take your time playing it -- there was no rush. If you wanted, you could just wander around and enjoy the views, which at the time were really quite impressive. Because of its accessibility, MYST remained the top-selling PC game for nearly a decade, until the equally-accessible "The Sims" took that spot in 2002.

Having re-played the game earlier this year (as realMYST Masterpiece Edition), I'm pleased to say that it still holds up. The actual ending feels a little lackluster when compared to some of the narratives we get to enjoy in modern games, but the gameplay environments and puzzles are still exciting to (re-)discover and solve.

The only MYST sequel that I've actually played, however, is Riven. And honestly, it wasn't as good as MYST. It's close, but when you're looking back at the games that have that indefinable iconic quality about them -- it's MYST, the original.

Also, partially thanks to a recent Kickstarter, the rest of the MYST games should be arriving on Steam anytime now (they're already on GOG). Myst III and IV were unavailable on either platform for years due to licensing issues, but Cyan finally has the rights again to allow them to get the complete MYST chronicle back out there.

Key received. Thanks.

Considering I'm mostly here for as a game collector to be very honest..... Hmmm... Sometime in the future. :p

I did play Riven though many years ago. Beautiful, but was too cryptic, especially since I was much younger, so I just followed a walkthrough. But I did hear the other games in the series were relatively easier.

I also still remember keep swapping CDs for each island. XD

Heh, no worries, it's a great one to have in the collection. :)
And that reminds me of my experience with Riven as well!...

I mostly made the comment since I would often see you at the end of many of SG's puzzles in the earlier SG years. :)
