I started playing the Trails-series last year and taking a little break right now after finishing the initial Trails in the Sky trilogy. I´m enjoying it a lot and If you like old-school JRPGs and have no problem with slow pacing, you will likely too. I´m amazed how well written the dialogues and characters are, and even conversations with random NPCs and little sidequests usually hold interesting bits for world- and character-building. Thats something I really love to see in RPGs.
...also the graphics and music give me those warm and fuzzy Ragnarok Online vibes 💗
PSA: This GA is for the original game, NOT the remake.
Bonus:
This game functions basicly as a prologue and is incomplete without part 2.
If the winner manages (or get somewhat close) to finishing this game within six month and if you're really enjoying it, just contact me and I´m gonna throw in the second game for free.

I won this fairly recently, planning to play it this month, really looking forward to it and glad to know about SC, so might have to plan to buy myself that sooner than later.

Hope you´ll enjoy it too 😀 I can also recommend the third game (dont look to closely because of spoilers) of this arc. Its mostly kind of an epilogue and a bridge to the next chapter, but also gives tons of interesting backstory to the characters. Gameplay is a bit different and feels similar to many modern DLCs. I would've hated if the series would've continued like this, but I like it as a change of pace between to games.

I enjoyed the PSP version back when I was in high school.
I loved “Scheherazade,” who fought using a whip.
It's been over 20 years, so I've forgotten the story and such, but I'm really looking forward to this remake.
Thank you!

Just to clarify: This GA is for the original version. The remake looks awesome too, probaply the best way to relive the story. I kind of envy you for having experienced the game in its original timeframe.

Whoops! Thanks for letting me know! I thought it was the remake version!
The original version has the Japanese text removed for some reason, so I can't play it. I'll have to pass this time.
But thank you for the wonderful giveaway!

By the way, if you like Ragnarok Online, have you heard of a game called “ARCTURUS”?
It's an old game, but it features an NPC from Ragnarok Online as the main character.
This game was pretty fun too.
ARCTURUS
*I could only find Japanese sites. Sorry about that.

Never heard of Arcturus, but it looks very nice :) Seems like PC-gaming in Japan and Korea actually had a some really awesome JRPGs back in the day. Sadly almost none of it made it to Europe. I was always mostly a PC-Gamer but also really loved JRPGs.

Sounds like you're not aware they're being remade?

I am aware, I just now added a little note to avoid any confusion. The remake was announced while I was in the middle of playing the trilogy and at first I thought "Damn, I should´ve waited a bit longer", but honestly I'm really glad I didn't.
While the remake looks pretty much perfect, the original has a lot of retro-charme that cannot be recreated. Also the remake only covers the first chapter, so it probaply will take some years until the trilogy is complete again. I also enjoy to experience the series´ evolution over the years and decades and something about the beautifully written dialogues makes me think they are meant to be read, not listened to. A voiceover may really change the impact.
I´m looking forward to play the remakes in a few years after finishing all other games in the series as a nice "back to the beginnings" experience.

Didn't want to say much since you're already giving away the original version, but I should at least reply to what you've mentioned.
You can play the original version with JP voices. The reason why you think the dialogues are meant to be read and not listened to is because of the liberty taken when localizing the text. The translators change some of the text so much it's very different from the JP script and this can be so significant in the later games that characters can have a different personality when you play in EN. Also, the remake isn't just simply 2D>3D. It adds several new content, somewhat different combat, and with the newer script closer to the JP one, it also means some names have been changed.

Very interesting. Didn't know translations of the original and remake are gonna be widely different. One more reason to look forward to play the remake one day, when its closer to the Japanese original 😁
Often times its easy to spot where translators have taken some liberties, even without knowing the original (the SNES/PS1 Final Fantasy games are notorious for that). But Tales in the Sky gave me no such impressions, everything is well written and ties up nicely. Its a bit sad to hear, its leading to some discrepancies with the later games.
Thanks for the infos!

They do look somewhat similar ^^

I played this a while back, I went in with 0 expectations and had a blast, it was surprisingly good. Just a shame that the story is 'incomplete' unless you get the other, it seems that they did the same for their other stories as well

I had it on my radar for ages and expected it to be my kind of game but still was positively surprised by how great it is. The story takes quite a while to get going, but there is so much nice world and character building right from the start that got me hooked right away.

I bought this for myself in the Summer sale. Re-entering my JRPG era. I recently finished Bug Fables and Grandia 2. I hope this lives up to the hype. Do you have any other JRPG recommendations for me?
Comment has been collapsed.
Great choice ^^ Bug Fables is high on my list too.
And I probaply should give Grandia 2 another chance some day. Back in the day it was a hard disappointment, because everybody kept hyping it as "better than Final Fantasy", so my expectations where VERY high. In terms of gameplay mechanics it actually IS better and probaply one of the best classic JRPGs out there, but the story, characters and world come not even close to the old FFs. I used to hate the game for that, but thats probaply unfair. With the right expectations it might still be an enjoyable journey, because nothing about it was actually bad. Just not up to my too high expectations. It would be interesting to see how I feel about it revisiting it now.
As for recommendations (apart from the obvious classics like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger etc.) I can really recommend Lost Odyssey as something most people might've missed. It was an Xbox 360 exclusive and is still only availabe on Xbox consoles. It was made by many people from the old FF-teams (including Sakguchi and Uematsu) and feels a lot like what could've come after FF10 if things at Square had not changed. Sadly the game has a lot of unused potential, that can feel painfull at times, but its also full of beautiful moments and also has great mechanics for battles and character development.
Also, if you haven't tried them, TRPGs like Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics and Triangle Strategy might be something for you to.
Personally I'm eager to look into the SaGa-series soon.

I already own it but is it worth playing this or should I just eventually get the remake?
Comment has been collapsed.
Not an easy question. I'm happy quite happy to have played the original, otherwise I wouldn't have chosen this game for the GA.
Take a look at this discussion for some more input on the topic.

not entering, but just wanted to say it's really cool to throw in part 2 as well if the winner is enjoying this game!

Just feels like the right thing to do in this case 😊

Nice. Unfortunately i own this one for more than 6 months... But at least i've played few years in Ragnarok Online.High Wizards for the win. Yes.

Stalker all the way! 😊
In all seriousness, HW and Sniper certainly were insanely strong! But Stalker was still more fun to play for me. I was the seventh Stalker to reach LVL99 on euRO and had lots of fun. But the game mostly lived by its community anyway.

Loved the first one but those missable items makes me hostile - of all the times I've started and stopped SC, It's because I missed an item that was only available for a short window. Trails is such a pain to 100%.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah... I decided early on that I'm not gonna go for completion. Even as someone who likes to explore every corner and backtrack between events, its pretty much impossible not to miss something unless you use a guide for every single step 😆 Once I made this decission, it didn't bother me anymore, even though a lot of stuff is actually very usefull. Maybe in another playthrough someday.

Highly recommended. I started my Trails adventure in 2023 and just finished my sixth game (Cold Steel I) last month. I've opted for a two-games-per-year pace, which seems like a good compromise to make reasonable progress without overdosing on the series.
Comment has been collapsed.
Seems like a good pace ^^ I played the first trilogy back-to-back and started Trails for Zero right afterwards. I'm at the same time VERY eager to continue the journey and a feel a bit overdosed, thats why I decided to take a break for now. Guess I'm gonna go with 2-3 games per year too for maximum enjoyment 😀
