Description

I wonder: is trying to give away a DLC still as terrible as I remember?

What do you mean, "terrible"?

Since there is no way to identify ownership, public giveaways on DLCs have tons of people entering who already own it. Moreover, if you want to make sure it is not actually owned, you need to ask for a screenshot of the game's DLC tab, showing the Steam name on it, which is already a hassle. There is someone famous in the community who had to reroll a DLC like a dozen times because of this. I myself had issues with DLCs before, this is why I switched to giving away the base game and just sending DLC keys along as a gratis.

I've seen it suggested that people add the winner and once they accept you can see on the store page if they own it. Still a pain but easier than asking for a screenshot. Either way thanks for the giveaway!

I see, thanks for explaining!

one possibility is not to give DLC away to low level people, because they often don't care. Giving it away at level 5 or higher has a much bigger possibility that someone who enters knows what he is doing ;-)

Oh, trust me, I have did quite a few giveaways to test out each level category. I am curious about the low levels here, but by setting it to level 2, I also got rid of a good portion of potential headaches.

Why would you have to ask for a screenshot from someone else? Just go to the winner's Steam profile and search their Games list. It will show DLC.

I just went to your Games list and searched for Ticket To Ride, and it showed me the base game, plus Europe, Legendary Asia, Switzerland and USA 1910. If I was giving away any of those DLC packs I would now know that you owned them.

Maybe I am confused about what you mean by "ask for a screenshot"?

Okay.
Tell me what DLC I have for Fallout: New Vegas.
Or which of the dozen or so DLCs I own for Resident Evil: Revelations 2. I purchased a small old edition first, then added a few later on sale.
Or what DLCs I chose to include in my Operation: Raccoon City purchase.
Or how many story DLCs I decided to try out for Mafia 2.

Edit: But wait, I can even destroy your original argument. Sou said, Steam shows me owning those four DLCs for Ticket to Ride. Guess what the reality is?

Interesting! I had no idea. I even checked Steamdb, but same problem there.

This will either inspire me to stop giving away DLC, or to just let it go without worrying about it anymore.

Because Steam's API and database is an incomprehensible mess. You either really have to not care the least bit, ask for screenshot proof of the winner not owning it, or just send DLC keys along with base game.

Or ask for a https://store.steampowered.com/dynamicstore/userdata/ copy and do the math yourself :D

You have something against Germany?

That DLC misses one of the core rules of the Germany table. You cannot use passengers, one of the biggest innovations of the original.

I gave away some paid DLC to a free game a while back. I didn't even think to check the winners.

I feel like if it wasn't in a bundle or part of a "GOTY" package or whatever, you'll probably be pretty safe. Otherwise...

While yes, it will be easy to verify my non-ownership as I have it wishlisted. So thank you :D

Thanks for this - I always add all DLCs for games I play to my wishlist, but not a lot are given away, for reasons mentioned above. Nice to see another RL car here :)

I'm testing things out. If this one can go relatively unpainful, I may try to do more of this game. (Don't ask me why, I never played or ever intend to play it.)

I will keep my fingers crossed. I play it casually, but since the DLCs are rarely on sale, I doubt I'll ever get around to buying any > hence these giveaways are appreciated when they do come around :)

May i ask why you don't intend to play this particular game?

It's multiplayer. I never play multiplayer. I prefer to play my games in my own way, and this often includes looking into how can I break it legally or by messing around a lot with Cheat Engine. This is also why I tend to avoid games with public leaderboards or purposefully sabotage my hacked runs to not show up on suspicious places on them.

I think giving away DLCs such as Rocket League cars is particularly safe. Those were never included in any bundle, nor heavily discounted.
Although, publicly giving away bundled DLCs will almost always result in multiple re-roll requests :C
People skipping hashtagged descriptions in caps simply won't mind checking their library upon entering.

Damn, you almost had me reinstalling Rocked League. Then I remembered how low its community has fallen.
Players harassing every match, screams on VoIP, leavers after suffering the first goal, during ranked matches (those will never get replaced, not even by bots).
Playing without at least two friends it's actually a painful experience now. It was way better long time ago :/

On a side note, whenever happens pretty rarely, though that I've won a DLC, I added it to my wishlist, if it wasn't already, and prompted the givers about it. So, they could check before providing me the key.

I found it pretty faster and hassle-free than the usual "add to friends and fake-gift them from the store".

It did? I decided at this game because I heard nice things about its community and I hoped I can finally do some good with a decent game devoid of all the little CoD kiddie aggressive impatient shitheads… pretty much every competitive online video game is full of.

It's just my personal experience. Many still find it pretty good.
Don't know, it might be only on EU servers but unfortunately I can't really play on any other continent server due to the ping spikes and rubberbanding.

Mind that on Overwatch I completely left EU servers and moved to Americas. I'd rather play with a constant 150ms ping, than 4/5 vs 6 every damn ranked match.
After two months, I got used to the lag and found a way more welcoming community :)
