When I was a kid, my friend's dad had a "fish bat", and I was told that it was for knocking out larger fish when they were caught. I don't fish, myself, but I would guess that if you killed it instantly with one swift blow, it would seem more humane than letting it suffocate out of the water.

I don't think that to bash fish is a common practice. Actually they have a special knife for fishing. And anymal welfare (is it called right?) is a very high value especially in germany.

This was some 35-30 years ago, and everytime someone caught a fish, they'd take a hammer, or a rock, etc, and crack it in the head a few times until it stopped flopping. Just always struck me as bizarre.
