Tolmezzo – Sappada

Stage 15 - May 20 - 176 km (109 mi)

< Stage 14 - Stage 16 >

The Stage

This stage across the Dolomites features a steady series of climbs and descents with just one uncomplicated stretch, namely the long false flat drag leading to Cortina d’Ampezzo. The route takes in several consecutive climbs: Passo della Mauria, di Tre Croci, di Sant’Antonio (for the first time along this side, with gradients exceeding 10% over long stretches) and Costalissoio (short and very steep, a first-ever pass). After descending into San Pietro di Cadore, the route follows the Piave river all the way to Sappada, heading for the finish. All the roads are relatively wide and well surfaced, with a number of up- and downhill hairpins. Final kilometres: the final 10 km run entirely uphill. After passing through a tunnel (partly open on one side), the route climbs at gradients of around 9% for a few kilometres, and then reaches the centre of Sappada, where the road eventually levels out in the final kilometre. The home straight (450 m) is on 6.5-m wide asphalt road.
