A shortish stage in the Pyrenees with the first HC mountain. The long descent to the finish could suit Nibali and Roglič, to name but a few. Will it be a slaughter?
Winner: Nans Peters
Salies-du-Salat
Salies, as its name suggests, has lived on salt since ancient times, as evidenced by the presence of Roman baths. At the beginning of the 20th century, the town’s thermal and tourist vocation was confirmed with the construction of the New Baths in 1923, and the growing reputation of its most mineralised waters in Europe (322 grams of salt per liter). Today, various types of accommodation, including the municipal residence Les Salatines, welcome spa guests, tourists and other vacationers. With a historical, archaeological and cultural heritage combined with quality infrastructure and equipment, Salies still lives on hydrotherapy and tourism.
Saint-Béat
St Béat overlooks the Garonne in a spectacular setting lined by mountains. In this authentic location, St Béat displays its lovely medieval architecture and its many shops. Known as a marble production centre since antiquity, it is still renowned today for its sculpture festival and the many statues to be found in the streets.
Very productive under King Louis XIV, the quarries – also known as “Roman breeches” – were later neglected before being rediscovered in the 19th century. Nowadays, nine quarries are still exploited including an underground one.
