Usually the answer is "because it can be". Aka, it's still profitable and probably more profitable at that price.

In my sense, Carbonated Water has a cleaner taste and "healthier" thus is generally more expensive here where I live; Singapore. When bought at the Supermarket, Carbonated Water can cost $2.50 each while a Can of Soda is $0.70+. Funnily, Carbonated Water for me has a cooling effect, especially living in a Tropical Island like mine with humid days/nights, Cheers, Cruse~

Here in Australia, they'll even pay more than $5/L for plastic bottles of uncarbonated water when they can get guaranteed safe water out of a tap for a fraction of a cent per litre. Is the plastic bottle really worth more than 2000 times the value of the water it is containing?
