As for me, still working to finish college, so my course de jour is a dish I've come to know affectionately as "Poverty Noodles," which is just spaghetti tossed into a frying pan with diced onion (Parmesan cheese and garlic, if I'm feeling exotic).

Spaghetti on a frying pan? :O

I cook the noodles in a pot first, lol. But they don't even really do much in the frying pan, other than get the same temperature as the onion.

Similar to my dish, fried speggetti. I start with eggs (seasoned with paprika and garlic), then onions, then spaghetti. If I happen to have anything else in the house I may throw it in too, such as peas or lettuce. When I add the noodles in I crack a final egg on top of them, which gives the noodles a nice texture. At each stage I add a bit of the sauce, which is oil based to fry into the food, and has milk, flour for thickening, garlic, paprika, ginger, onion powder, salt, and a bit of corriander.

As for a cooking tip, if you want to boil eggs but the egg is already cracked, you can throw some salt in the water and the egg won't leak out while boiling.

I don't like spaghetti, but if I don't have anything else to eat, I also prepare some, or some eggs with ham, or some fried potatoes. One day however I shall learn to cook real food ,or so I hope.

I know there are better more traditional ways to make ziti, but I just make it cheap. Poverty ziti :) - 2 boxes of ziti noodles $2, 1 jar and a half of pasta sauce $3 (I use the shelf stuff -Ragu etc..), 16 oz container of ricotta cheese $3 and mozzarella (2lb block for $6) - you can bake it for crispy edges or just make it in a pot. This makes several days worth of food and can be frozen for quick meals. costs about $14 dollars in total, makes about 7 good sized portions and I usually have 1 -1.5 pounds of mozzarella left over for other things.
I've been using barilla whole grain pasta, and I'm actually losing weight eating pasta, rather than gaining. It tastes a little different but I'm getting used to it.

Ha! I still burn soup regularly. And one time, I cut myself on a spaghetti noodle trying to break them in half to fit in my pot.
My favorite cooking tip though is throwing a cooked spaghetti noodle at the wall to figure out if theyre done or not. That said, my wall has one spot that is particularly clean compared to the rest of the wall LOL.

My cheap&lazy protein dish: a salad of cannellini beans, sweet red onions (and basil). Olive oil, salt and pepper as condiment. (Depending on where you live, buying a small basil plant is a good investment since you only use a couple of leaves at a time and they will keep regrowing).

If you have a freezer and a microwave, you can "cook" tasty meals by buying frozen vegetables and pre-cooked meat (oten breaded) and just heating them up in the microwave until they are ready. You can also cook rice/pasta like that using microwaveable pots with a lid (make sure the lid is also microwaveable), heating up the water and using it to 'pressure cook' the rice/pasta reheating the water every so often. It's a bit more expensive than cooking from just the basic ingredients but it's much cheaper than eating out (of course it all depends on where you live).

Since it's autumn, I'll tell you a good recipe for preventing all kinds of nasty autumn things. Slice a lemon and ginger (it's better to slice it after it has been frozen, you'll get neat thin slices =)), put them into a jar and add honey. Close the jar and put it into the fridge, and after 3-4 days you are ready to take it. Put a teaspoon of it into your favourite mug and add boiled water. Or add the honey-lemon-ginger mix into your tea.
It's good for sore throat and overall is a good treat =) I like to add more ginger than lemon, so that it is more spicy.
Another thing that makes my days better is a cake in the mug.
Combine 4 tbsp of floor, 4 tbsp of sugar, 2 tbsp of cocoa (unsweetened, otherwise it would be too sweet) in a mug. Add one egg and mix it. Then add 3 tbsp of milk and 3 tbsp of vegetable oil and mix again. Put it into the microwave and microwave for around 3 minutes, depending on your microwave settings. When it's ready, just take a fork and eat =)

I discovered this recently and it's my new favourite way to make potatoes as a side dish: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/9f/e6/22/9fe622e99d1d20a0281962e96255b6fa.jpg Btw if you put the potato in a wooden spoon it's easier not to cut all the way through :)

As for cheap food that worked well, the "whatever I'm in the mood for soup", where I just get all the cheap ingredients I think would go well together and cook them as a soup, adding the ingredients in the order of time they need to cook (eg. potato needs a lot more time than green leaves and pre-cooked pulses). Depending on where you live and what you like, stuff like chickpeas, potato, beans, kale, broccoli, pasta, cauliflower, lentils, carrots, onions, whatever else, can all go in with the spicing of your choice. The ingredients are usually pretty cheap when bought canned or in larger packs, and the food itself is filling with all the carbohydrates and fibres. The only work it needs is the chopping, and then gradually adding the ingredients as it cooks. As far as I remember (haven't done this for years now) the cooking takes at most half hour. If you want to go fancy, shred some cheese on top when serving :)
