I tried to like the classic Ultima games, especially Ultima IV.....but couldn't figure out how to play the game.

The manual is literally a hundred pages long, I bet back in the '80s it was normal for gamers to read it before playing. I can-not.

The only reason I have happy childhood gaming memories from 80s/early 90s games is because my brother played the tough ones and I watched. I could surely handle many of them not in the action/try-not-to-die-and-fail genres, but boy would the computer fly out the window if I had to play something like Shadow of the Beast.

I guess because I don't enjoy challenging gameplay, I just never bothered. For other folks it's the absolute greatest joy.

I agree with you. Kids in the '80s even had to draw their game maps -- with pen and paper!
Well you see, the learning curve for '80s-mid '90s RPGs was very high, devs made them as hard as possible because they didn't cater to all consumers, but rather, they catered to the hardcore. Only hardcore fans of RPGs would buy and play them.

Nowadays the mainstream RPGs are easy to pickup and play, while difficult-to-learn 80s dinosaurs like Ultima are all but gone.

Technically 32-bit, but the second time I beat Spelunky I accidentally attached an ignited sticky bomb to myself after killing the final boss. I managed to go through the exit in time but exploded during the victory animation. It didn't count as a win :'(

Oh wow. The combination of clumsiness and an unforgiving game, or rather cruel timing. Thank you for sharing and sorry to bring back the memory. XD
