The Civilization games are great 4X games, so I would recommend any of them. (I have personally played Civ IV the most).

4X games are kinda sparse but yeah. Civ looks like a good place to start. Simple mechanics.

Age of Wonders 3 is easy to learn and a lot of fun.

4X games by nature tend to be pretty involved, and lengthy to play, but will generally have some smaller maps what allow for "shorter" games. If you want to give them a whirl, I don't see why playing this one would be a bad idea.
