The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a good one.
One of his other books, Blood Meridian, is also supposed to be really good, but I have not got around to reading it so I can't personally recommend it yet.

Something else on my reading list is Metro 2033. (The book the game is based on) That is also supposed to be really good.
