BlazBlue is a traditional fighting game, where two characters participate in a duel. The game's story involves dissent and destruction between a powerful council, officially known as "the Library", which controls a great power that once saved humanity, but which now exerts its power in repressive ways.

To win a round, one player must disable the other, reducing his opponent's life to zero or having more life remaining than his opponent when time runs out. Each character has a weak, medium and strong attack. Every character has a unique technique, called the "Drive" attack, which is different for each character.
