I remember hearing a different story but can't remember the source since it was years ago.
Supposedly the devs had declared that there would not be a Larry 4 as they'd move on to other projects, but they just came back and did 5 to stay true to their word.

I heard there was too much "four"play, and they had move onto the next "quint"essential game in the series before things got "out of hand."
