Periodically I see one of these pop up. I have an idea for a JRPG (old-school style, think Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy) and I've been thinking about getting one of the RPG Maker apps, but I have no idea which version of RPG Maker is best, and which ones are compatible with each other. For example, right now I can get (on Humble) VX Ace Deluxe for 90% off and MV for 85% off... but all the "Resource Packs" I can find on sale are all for MZ. I don't know what the difference is between VX, VX Ace, VX Ace Deluxe, MV, and MZ are, and I don't know whether MZ Resource Packs can be used on VX or MV. Or should I just hold off for the new Unity-based one to be released? So many questions, so few answers.

If you are planning to use RPG Maker, I would like to give you one suggestion:
Wait for the Humble RPG Maker Bundle. It appears annually. You can pay $25 to get all RPG Maker versions (not including MZ or later last year) and a lot of DLCs.
If you want me to say the difference, I think there are only 3 different art styles: 2003, XP, and VX (later). After VX, the main difference lies in the system and the architecture, not the art. VX Ace is definitely better than VX, because it has a little advanced system and more various basic (default) RTP materials.
Note that the "Resource Pack" in different versions may be not optimized. Since VX Ace, every time when EnterBrain publishes a new RM version, they will copy the old "Resource Packs" to the new version and sell them for another time. Many of these packs are not adjusted according to the changes in the new RM version. For example, if you take a look at the following "Resource Pack":
https://store.steampowered.com/app/721060
You will find a lot of negative reviews showing that it is poorly optimized.

Thank you. I believe that answers pretty much all my questions for now ... although some more or less with "it depends".
