I own the basic edition but when I try to activate the key, it's telling me to "please first activate the original game?"

i saw in your profile you never started call to arms, never played 1 minute. try to start the base game for 2 min and try again to activate key, maybe it helps, dont know

Hmm...I think I know what the issue is. I grabbed the game when it was free but it didn't grant me the basic edition: https://imgur.com/a/R8kQyAX . Seems I can't activate it without it. I think you should re-roll, the key won't work unless the owner has the basic edition on their account.
