Description

Not a huge FPS person. I hope the winner gets around to this and will enjoy it.

Optional: Recommend me a book. (If you made a recommendation ... pick another book. I'm an avid reader.)

I'm reading the Dresden Files at the moment and can recommend those (I'm at Volume 12 or sth. like that).

I think I have that somewhere but haven't touched any yet. Any time I see so many volumes ... I worry it will become a slog at the end. This is why I never read The Wheel of Time series. I have, however, read every single Jack Reacher novel. They get repetitive, but you don't need to turn your brain on for those.

I just finished Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown, so I'll give the first Dresden Files book a spin ... actually, after I try "Spin", a recommendation by Pizzafohra.

I read Harry Potter Books 1 and 7 several years ago but never got time to read the other ones. These holidays I have managed to read books 2, 3 and currently am in book 4. Thus, I should recommend them. I have also heard great things about The Name of the Wind by Patrick Routhfoss or something like that

The Name of the Wind is one of my FAVORITE books of all time. The sequel is amazing, too.

I like to re-read the Harry Potter books every once in a while. I love the first three books. The fourth needs a re-write and re-edit. The rest of the series gets a little dark. I thought the new play (effectively Book 8), which follows one of Harry's kids, is terrible. Might have been better as a proper book, but in play format, it skips around a lot and there's not much character development.

I have not managed to get a hold of the name of the wind though I have been wanting to since I friend recommended it to me... Since the first HP book I read was actually book 7 I really liked it (and waaay more than the movie) ... I do not know if 4 needs that since I have barely started it but I agree with you on the last book: it would have been way better as a proper book (even if a short one). I kind of like the story but I think everything went by hastily... would love to see the play, though...

btw, have your read Beedle's tales? I read them and they make for a short reading (even if a little childish) ... I may actually read those tales to my kids (if I ever get some of those :P)

Edit: Oh, I just remebered... try and read Diablo's Sin War trilogy... I really liked the story...

The Name of the Wind is incredible. I think the series is slated for five books, so let's see if he can keep it up. The number of trilogies (and more) that started strong and fell off the map is far too many.

I'll look into the Beedle's Tales. Sometimes something simple and childish is just what the doctor ordered.

Haven't heard of Sin War trilogy. Just looked it up ... Richard Knaak was one of my least favorite authors when I was big into DragonLance. I vaguely recall his stuff being harder to get into, though to be fair the best Dragonlance books by far were those written by the Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman combo.

I cannot recall my exact feelings about the writting ot the Sin War books, but I remeber overall I liked the story. They kind of talk something about it in Diablo 3 after you reach heaven and begin reading on some lore. Overall, it talks about the creation of Earth and of Nephalem...

it depends on what You like ^^ My fav books/stories are:
Lovecrafts Cthulhu myths
Poes stories
Stephen Kings 'The Long Walk' (I love him, but this book change my life)
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis (maybe childish but with great hidden story)
maybe Tolkiens work? :D and not only LOTR but Silmarillion and so on as well :D

I'll go read "The Long Walk". I really liked "Running Man", which you probably already know he wrote under the Richard Bachman pseudonym.

I love fantasy books, but Narnia and LOTR aren't my thing. Don't ask me why on Narnia, but for Tolkien, I find his writing to be boring. The language doesn't captivate me and I used to get bored. Maybe I should try it again.

Also, probably the saddest book I ever read was by CS Lewis. "A Grief Observed" is a collection of this thoughts following the death of his wife. I cried.

I´m reading the Witcher-Books right now and enjoying them very much :D

I started one but stopped because I wasn't in the mood at the time. The first story was basically the start to the first Witcher game. The tone reads exactly like the game, which is why I found it weird that Andrzej Sapkowski, the author, was so critical of the game.

Yeah, not sure why Sapkowski is so critical about them either.. as far as I´ve read it now (i´m in the middle of the 5. book) the story hasn´t yet arrived at the point where the first game starts (apart from that first story that is the intro to the first game) so I cant say how well the written story is actually translated into the games, but as you said yourself: The tone fits perfectly!

Maybe some details they changed were important to him or he just dislikes games as a medium overall and he sounded a bit bitter about the worldwide fame the games got while his books wheren´t doing too well internationally before the release of the games. I think he should be proud of both, his books AND the games based on them.

When I mentioned the first story, I don't mean the first entire book. It seemed like the first book was a collection of shorter stories, and the one I'm referencing is the one you mentioned that kicks off the start of the first book, related to the princess -- for those who haven't read it.

I'll check with zelghadis. He said the books are much better in the original language, which isn't surprising. So maybe it's the translation of the books that's the culprit, assuming Sapkowski has a legitimate complaint.

Pretty much everything is best in its original language, thats right ^^ I´m playing the games in English but reading the books in German and I´ve heard that the German translation is supoosed to becloser to the original. Can´t really say much about that without knowing the Polish orignal though ^^ But since the developers of the games are Polish too and the games are released there with Polish Voiceovers and all, I don´t think the translation plays a role here.

The first two books are basicly collections of shortstories, but the second one already takes steps towards an ongoing narrative.

Ayn Rand - Fountainhead. Heavy read, but really worth it. Or, try the Great Gatsby, it's also good

Thanks mate for the gift.

If you want to read some Indian Mythology, you can try the Shiva Trilogy. Doesn't cost a lot, pretty basic English but simple mythological story. Three Book collection. Cheaper on Amazon India website. :)

Very interesting. Not that big on Asian history and mythology, but I should really get more cultured. This definitely looks interesting. Many thanks and enjoy the game.
