"Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson is one of the better books I have ever read. From Wikipedia:

"Cryptonomicon is a 1999 novel by American author Neal Stephenson, set in two different time periods. One group of characters are World War II-era Allied codebreakers and tactical-deception operatives affiliated with the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park (U.K.), and disillusioned Axis military and intelligence figures. The second narrative is set in the late 1990s, with characters that are (in part) descendants of those of the earlier time period, who employ cryptologic, telecom and computer technology to build an underground data haven in the fictional Sultanate of Kinakuta. Their goal is to facilitate anonymous Internet banking using electronic money and (later) digital gold currency, with a long-term objective to distribute Holocaust Education and Avoidance Pod (HEAP) media for instructing genocide-target populations on defensive warfare."

If you like heavy reading: "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco. Way more details and additional information than the (great!) movie with Connery.

If you like fantasy: Books by David Eddings (Belgariad Saga, ...), Raymond E. Feist (Riftwar Saga, ...), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn Trilogy, ...).

Light reading of a mixture of science and crackpot theories: Dan Brown (The Robert Langdon books, e.g. Da Vinci Code), Frank Schätzing (The Swarm).

If you want something for long winter evenings, try John Steinbeck's "East of Eden"
If you want something you'll finish in two hours, there's nothing better than Albert Camus' "The Stranger"

Check out anything by Pat Cadigan. I'd recommend Synners, I don't know if the rest can be had outside of the Omnibus.
Alternatively, anything in the Discworld series is a great read (although avoid The Light Fantastic and Eric if you can, they're not great)

You should specify your taste while asking such questions! :/
Anyway, some general recommendations from me:

  • Looking for Alaska by John Green
If you fancy the thought of having a happening college/hostel life -having friends closer than siblings, having booze, sex and night-outs with your friends and stuff- then you'll enjoy this book. It's my favourite. The MC is going to live in a hostel and it's about his experiences there.
  • The Secret by Rhonda Byrne
I feel everyone should read this book. I guess it gets over the top at times, but it's basically about how optimism is important in life. And that your thoughts attract and influence events in life. Atleast watch the documentary this book is based on.
