People use Steam groups because the information is usually pushed right away while you game or chat with your friends. Sitting on those sites means time wasted looking at deals you may not care about. While Steam groups allows you to ignore the announcements that don't interest you and click on the ones that do.
There's plus sides to both for sure, but there's no need to call groups that post deals for the members' benefit "crappy" or the people that use them "out of their mind".

Most deals last at least a week and the rest last for 3 or 4 days. You dont need information fed to you per second so you dont miss out on deals and you most certainly dont need to sit and stare at a website and wait for deals, that's crazy, people have better things to do. What you can do is checking those sites daily which takes 5 seconds most. Drama free.

There is no personal profit involved in our groups, the credit is used in giveaways that we hold almost everyday in our giveaway group. Most members of OP know this and it is always communicated with members, mods and admin alike. You keep dancing around that same bush and you'll soon get bored.

As slip said, our group gives all that we make back in form of giveaways. Another thing is, we don't EVEN JUST use the referrals for the giveaways as it is simply not enough, therefore we end up having to fund the giveaways with the money from our own pocket. Therefore, our situation is COMPLETELY different to this one. Do your research before pointing the finger.

I'm seeing an awful lot of flawed analogies in this thread. Let me explain it to those people who still don't understand what the problem is (I'm looking at you DENSOrtes).
A guy comes to your door, or approaches you in the mall, or you get a leaflet in the mail, whatever. In my opinion, the main reason why anyone would consider suicide is to escape from the situation that they are in.

This small thing is not going to ruin his life. This could have been fixed by just saying,
"I will be exchanging all link with my ref-links and use all the proceeds on myself and if you don't agree with me, leave this group and create your own because this is the way I will run my group" (people probably would have stayed, they weren't in it to benefit)
or
"I'm sorry I couldn't make any giveaways and modified posts, I'm short on payment for my rent and really needed the extra money. That was why I edited all your links to my links. I hope you can understand."
If they were friend, they'll understand and then have a meeting to discuss about it because the reason why no one cared about the ref links and allowed its use was because it supposedly went back towards the group. Like reaching an agreement of using the in-store credits from gmg to buy games for giveaways and which ever one that gave him money to help pay his bills.
But instead he stealth edited his ref links in people's posts, deleted threads, avoided criticism, moved threads, banned people if he thought that they are thinking about going against him, modified entire threads to gibberish, lied about his earns which went from not that much to help paying bills, and disrespected his staff saying that they all are replaceable when he was backed into a corner. At that point people knew how sammy was playing this little game and decided to leave the group and informed people which brings us to here.
Now if only the one in question showed up and explain his side of the story because all I got from this thread was 'I hid how much I earned from the ref links and one of my admins went rouge causing me to have no mods now. All of them turned on me (huge red flag here, if everyone just turned on you, you must have messed something up bad) and they deleted all the announcements and bans. (whoever did that over reacted. At least just delete the ones you made and undoing bans was just a no) I only just used the ref links to pay my bills but didn't tell them because I was embarrassed. It's my group, I should be able to do what I want. Hey, will you chat goers help me rebuild this group.'
This small event probably won't reach the rest of the internet, it'll probably stay confined in this circle of the internet. Heck it's not even spreading to the members of hookup or they don't really care as long as they get deals. Although the greenlight thing might be different but there have been plenty of those sort of cases in the beginning of greenlight and they didn't make much of that big of a scene.
Worse case scenario, he can't pay his rent anymore and have to stop gaming to find a third job and no more AAA games. Although if employers did ever catch a whiff of this he probably wont get a job requiring leadership skills or handling of money but this is his own fault though although we kind of advertise it a bit.
Best case scenario, nothing happens to him except a few cents off his next referral payout. It was just an internal conflict of lies, deception, and disrespect. This is nothing to kill oneself over.

When the admin editing and deleting all that stuff in the group came to the sg group chat a while back ago asking if a mod could delete or close this thread I was confident it wouldn't happen as it's not a big deal and as far as mods being able to voice their side of the story I can say I was appalled to see him or her ask to have this thread closed or locked.
Keep in mind I don't take sides in this matter but it certainly is quite an interesting matter to see how and when a group owner takes responsibility for his or her actions and when a subordinate draws the line on what's right or wrong about the actions of the group owner.

writing what he built is taking away the amount of work the other admins put into it. While i do not agree with how that went down, the things he deleted were mostly admins and mods work. I would say about 80 to 90% of the things he deleted were made by the admins and mods.

Like people have said. If you were on Sammy's good side (and most the time there was never any reason not to be) then things went fairly smoothly. The moment you show some distrust or question one of his motives or choices, he'd take whatever measure possible to silence it and try to move on without any changes. Conflict had happened in the past and it did lead to loss of other admin (eg. kriss-c), but never had it effected the entire team of admin so badly, even the very few admin that stayed with Hookups were disgusted by the actions taken so the Onwer is lucky enough to have kept them.
Short answer: Yes he has always been like this, but never enough to be brought to the attention of all admin in such a way. Possibly due to the fact evidence was always deleted before people got a chance to see it.

...so, what I don't get is, why are people assuming he's somehow a despot? I know not many people share my belief that most "evil" perpetrated in the world is due to misguided decisions, life situations, and emotional instability.
Sure, we see that he is clearly trying to play the victim of circumstance, what with his supposed two jobs (one of which involves frequent deaths) and schooling, in addition to coaching a Little League team, developing a modern PC-capable version of a game he may or may not have legal or illegal claim to, and selling his plasma, all while going to -100 in his bank account every month due in part to his $400 rent. It could only be more heart-rending if he were raising children alone while trying to provide life-saving cancer treatment to a close family member.
BUT! I don't think he's a truly bad guy here.
He seems to just be a guy that knows only to take what he gets. If somebody can teach him how to focus on what's important and learn how to effectively communicate and learn to accept his problems, then he might still become a contributing member of society. I'm looking to you, unnamed girlfriend!

If you ask or/and tell him something he don't like to hear, you are removed from his friend's list, and if you put it in public, he bans you from group and erase every proof. Both happened to me which I already typed. It's pure and simple dictatorship.
It's his way or nothing. As long as you admire him and don't question anything, he'll pretend his your best friend but it's so artificial that I was sick of it (I was moderator before Valve's temporal shut down in January, so I know it, I had to communicate with him).

Personally, I have gotten "hooked up" with deals, but I've gotten better from Russian traders or even sites like Gamefly so I have no qualms about leaving his groups as I mentioned in an above comment. Also Sammy personally replied with a very unfriendly comment, and I see this is how he's like... But I think overly bashing his Greenlight game is unnecessary -

if you look at the intro to the game it is copyright 1995... he says he's in 20's... there is no Sammy in the credits. it is not his game. its like that one person trying to greenlight minecraft. and if you look at some comments people congratulate him on making the game and he says thank you... he is not saying he is green lighting an abandon-ware game that came out in the 90's

Why would anyone do that? All the former admin are fine and have moved on, even some to other, more stable groups. Anyone who is so angered by his actions or the effect it had on Hookups should take a second to breathe and go play some games. Death threats or any type of harrassment should never happen. Saying that, Sammy does have a track record of either exaggerating or straight cut making things up to create a reaction. So without seeing it first I don't know what to take of this at all.

Interesting drama over at Hookups. It appears the group has been going crazy with referral links, and there are accusations that ownership is profiteering. The admins and mods have effectively risen up against ownership.
While this may be construed as calling out [I think this is more about the ethics and real mission of the group, though I guess it's hard to separate from the owner], given that many of us are members of the group and not everyone receives the announcements, I thought it was worth posting.
The ethics of the situation may make some question whether they want to continue being members there. I, for one, will be leaving the group.
