That doesn't happen for the same reason a deleted comment will still count in Unread Messages. An increment when it happens with nothing more for tracking is much less resource intensive.

if i unWL you, the graph just loses that like it never happened, there isn't a drop to the previous number.
SG updates the points every 15min, this could be updated every 15min as well, to prevent abuse (clicking repeatedly)
just, if you make a useless statics page that we all love to check, make it more informative
