hi, just faced the following situation: some time ago i have entered giveaways (with several weeks duration) for the same game title. then in a few days period i have won both, but for sure i didn't know that i need to leave the giveaways that i have entered before.
i synchronize with Steam account quite frequently, so couldn't see the titles for the games that i own. is it possible to force users to leave giveaways with existing games automatically? or there are any cons against?

so at the moment i'm not marking the GA as received and also wrote to the GA-starter to request a new winner. but i could still get a suspension?

No, you did the right thing by signaling yourself to the second guy. You're fine.

thanks for the comments, but wouldn't it be more convenient, if the user will be automatically kicked-off the giveaways for the titles he already own?

It would be great, but this would also means GAs with less than 10 entrants would not be counted (if it was some kind of contest, for example).
I usually go in the entered GA list every time I win a game and remove all the entries to that game.

There are a couple of issues with automating this.

  1. What if the first guy never delivers? You then got kicked from another giveaway you might have won and don't get your winning. It might be hard to track the giveaway to enter again if it was private.
  2. A lot of people don't understand how things work and will mark the game as received before actually getting it, thinking this is how they get the game. (Especially non-English speaking users) So even if the received mark was used for that purpose, it would still be error-prone.

  1. SG should remove you from GA's once you sync'd your account, it checks if you own any game, only then it does something. I don't see the issue.

So on free weekends, you get kicked from GA's because Steam reports that everyone owns the game.

You can, if you haven't synced your account during the weekend. Or you could have joined before the weekend, then you sync and BOOM, you're out.

A lot of things could be automated if only the Steam API was more reliable. :P

Only con it might be not worth the effort on cg end. It might take quite a lot of effort depending how system is built. And winning same game twice in short period of time is really rare compared to amount of giveaways that are made here.

The site already queries your entries and wins as you request, so all it would have to do is query a winner (which doesn't happen every second) for his other entries (which aren't too many).

The only time it would be failsafe to remove entries is when game shows up on steam account. Any other time it might lead to frustration because the other giveaway didn't give game for whatever other reason.

But you are right. It might be simple to check if winner have won game on his list.

On other hand it might triple amount of work server have to do. Instead of "choose winner" you get "choose winner"->"find game in list"->"reroll yes/no". It might seem not much, but it would have to be done for every giveaway and server has hard time as it is sometimes. Or at least had in old SGv1

Pretty much this.

It could be as expensive as sync'ing an account plus checking coincidences.
Just as time consuming as 10 hits of the front page or just opening a forum post with several replies.

I also sync often. As soon as I win a game, activate it, and mark as received, I do the following:

  • Click on the Entered tab on the left side of the Giveaways page
  • Do a search for the game I've won
  • Remove any active entries for that game
  • Re-sync my account

No, you won't get a suspension. You did exactly what you are supposed to do. I would wait to receive the game before removing yourself from all the other GA's, however. What if the creator doesn't deliver the game?
