how to check CHAT MESSAGES when getting online?

i have this problem very often i click on unread chat messages but steam doesnt open and shows me no messages from whom, so you dont know who sent you messages.....

umm... unread chat messages are in the notification area in their own group, does that not work for you?

if you click on the View unread messages.. or .. on that notification .. it will open the chat window with all the unread messages :) in the background though.. it's weird.
