I've been messaged on Steam a couple of times over the last few days with the exact same message from several different steamgifts members:

Sup mate, can you help me please?
my friend team need a little bit more votes to qualify on tournamnet could you vote pls?

Be careful guys, don't click any suspicious links, even if they are from your Steam friends.

You would think that people are aware of this scam as it's widely used.

Could be some members that aren't regularly on the boards. Or they are using the family share and someone they are sharing it with clicked on it.

Well, honestly everyday on Twitter there are people even fall for this shit: "Congratulations! You won 1 BTC. Send me $500 on CashApp to verify with the sponsor. They will send you back 1 BTC and $1000 for your honesty. Hurry, or I'll reroll" xD

I guess mostly are kids with access to their parent's cards. Unbelievable !!!

Yes and it's a huge ammount that fall for it.
It surprise me each time.

It give only ONE rule that you need to follow.
Login your steam account at the STEAMSTORE
Each site that want then again the name + password is a fake phishing site.

When i have time and be in a funny mood i play with the scammers. I write as example that i am at site XYZ a member since months or that the report to the admin is no problem because he is my friend and i solved it.
The last one got so aggressive that he told me he hijacked me and can login my account.
I wished him much fun and blocked him after that :-D

I'm on the Reddit /r/Steam discord, and it seemed like there was a rash of people a few days ago that got their email accounts stolen because they used the same password for everything.

So it may not have been that they fell for the phish... maybe they just use the same password for everything

Best way to check that is go to https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and enter your e-mail address. Some simple precautions, use 2FA with your phone for Steam, do not click suspicious urls from anyone, use a password manager such as LastPass or the one available in Firefox or Chrome,(hell they even create passwords for you, so you don't have to use the same one for everything) If you have to enter a password copy & paste it, have a GOOD anti-virus software(I use malwarebytes premium) It's 2020, I can't believe people are falling for this stuff still.

Recently I have witnessed people who have such accounts contaminated and send their messages.

Do they have something in common with "CS: GO"?(Is it a coincidence?)
I think people who have played games have been victimized and sent suspicious messages.

In any case, it's a good idea to submit a report to Steam Support and not touch the link.
(The person who receives the message in question should report it to Steam.)

I received 3 messaages like that in the last week. Vote for my friend bla bla bla

Next day I was removed from all their friend lists and some of the owners posted their own steam walls saying "hacker removed all my friends".

PLEASE STOP CLICKING RANDOM LINKS.

They said they would give me a key after I vote for them. I asked for the key and saying I had voted (obviously not), then they deleted me from the friend list.

From what I gather from the last phisher who actually responded to me before they blocked me (like they always do), it looks like their follow-up to that obvious scam right now is to basically try and guilt trip you into going along with it. Aka removing you from the friends list but not immediately blocking you and going "if it's really hard for you to spend 1 minute, then why are you my friend?" or whatever. Pretty nasty and manipulative.

Ugh, why do they always have to clear people's friends lists though? It's just such an unnecessary dick move... <.<

It's happened to me more than a few times to me, too.
Kind of sad they remove friends. :(

You know what, maybe Steam should limit how many friends you can remove daily, or have a list of previous friends log up to 90 days so that people can easily add them back if needed or accidents.

Limiting removing friends would be strange, but some sort of way to re-add/undo friend removals is a great idea!

same happened to me. in last days. before months and months without scamming messages. Instantly I was removed from his friendliest.

I was surprised that this scamming message was from someone who created 31 413 giveaways for SG users.....

Thank you. I'm not too hopeful, though. I wish support would just message me and tell me to take a hike and be done with it.

Hmmm, well that explains why I got that message from someone, though "hmmm" and then they had kicked me off their friendlist the day after (though that's been like a month or 2 ago now).

Besides not clicking on highly suspicious links, try also to set up 2FA on EVERYTHING, it may be a bit annoying when you change your phone, but it helps a lot.

Just had one now. Reported the account as compromised to Valve. Unfriended me after I told them I was going to do it. I keep that person in my Steam Chat window so I can try to re-add them at a later date once they've gotten their account back.

I got that bogus message from a friend, too.

  1. The friend was behaving oddly, not like himself.
  2. The friend did not respond realistically to anything I said to him on a personal level.
  3. When I questioned his odd behavior, he removed me from his friends list.
  4. The website he directed me to was bogus.
  5. The entire "vote for this team" request was bogus. (That team isn't even in the IEM tournament.)

Needless to say, I reported the probable hijacking to Steam.

"Can u vote for my csgo team please at XXXXX?
need 2 more votes
team XXXXX
https://XXXXX"

and comments about a hijacked account start piling up on his profile.
this is not a good way to start your 2021.
