I think it's a good tactic to get the spotlight on yourself for a while and is even better if you have other, better, products to show off. Nothing wrong with free stuff though, right?

But the OP isn't... when they start listing actual "fairly good games", maybe others will? For now, the bar is set really low, like... underground in a cave low. :)

It is fine when games go free to play, but it's not nice when they do vice versa. I remember I once played a free to play game, it was't amazing, but it was fairly good for a free game, so I gave a positive review. And then, after some time, I accidentally found out that the game is now paid, and I feel cheated - they got positive rating just because it was free, it totally not worth the money they ask for it now. So what I wanted to say - I really hope that those devs are making games free to play in a good will, and not to somehow circumvent restrictions of "Steam is learning about this game" status and then switch it back to paid.

Classic Racers became free for everyone shortly after I purchased it. It's a great game, too bad it never got too far.
While it says 'free to play', the game is entirely free. It has no DLC or in-app purchases. I can recommend it to everyone who likes racing games.

Thank you for this! I've had Baobabs Mausoleum on my wishlist for quite some time now, but Steam never bothered to tell me that there was a 100% discount on it. I feel like that might be a significant sale price. 😒 I feel like this one in particular is very smart to make free to play, because there's a second part, and I've been REALLY unsure about whether or not I'd like this; having played the first part inspires a lot more buyer's confidence in buying the second.

... very smart ...
agreed! game is not for everyone, strange stuff, weird music, ... so giving the chance to play a first chapter for free is kinda clever (still being generous, in my book, cause you usually only get a demo).
and Valve/Steam, obviously, doesn't much care to share the news.
but SteamGifts does!
(i've also just noticed -and wishlisted- that there's a new third part... )

I'm into this now. All these times I had the game, only had the urge to try it when it went f2p. Gotta say it's pretty intuitive despite the intimidating interface. Paradox DLC policy with the game though (or in general), ugh, 5 bucks to rename my Petty Kingdom. Seriously can feck off.

Vicious Circle
Used to be 20 bucks. Now free to play.

King Arthur's Gold. Great little game once you get the hang of it.
Also, Splitgate: Arena Warfare launched free to play, but it looks pretty decent - kind of Halo x Portal. I think multiplayer/competitive games often opt into going f2p or at least giving away a bunch of copies because their game hinges on the activity.

It isn't documented in order to limit a devs ability to manipulate the system.

What does Steam want for that?
these should be Valve's words:
"Our confidence metric is based on sales and player engagement figures. We do not include data from user reviews, wishlists, total playtime, or any other judgment of the "quality" of the game. We're simply looking for a broad player base."
so, basically, sales and "playtime".
edit: "playtime" is not the right word here.tho, they've used "player engagement" and don't know exactly what does it means... :D)

Space Pilgrim Episode I became Free to play a couple of months ago, I won it in a giveaway some days before that.
Played and enjoyed it so I bought the other episodes too, my favorite one is the third one, it reminds me of Monkey Island. :D

Z1 Battle Royale a.k.a. the shitshow formerly known as H1Z1 :D
But if we're talking about fairly good games maybe MANDAGON but I think that game has always been free.

Yeah Mandagon has always been free and yeah it's a pretty good game. I enjoyed it.

Cat Burglur: A Tail of Purrsuit is pretty fun and it's free because the whole game purpose is to showcase animal charities.
It's very similar to Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and it's got cats :D

Blade symphony went f2p around march, I dont know if that could be considered recent, but you can get a few new stuff in garry's mod from it

Multiplayers tend to go F2P if they don't have enough of a player base. For newer games, it means they've pretty much failed and it's a last-ditch attempt to make it work. For older games, it's because the player base is dwindling, and they want to keep it going longer (particularly if a game has loot boxes)
Games with a lot of DLC may go F2P when there aren't a lot of new purchases anymore, in the hopes that the new players may buy some DLC later.
Sometimes games are given away / go F2P when a sequel comes out, to drum up interest.
Otherwise, generally speaking, it's games that aren't really selling anymore, where the dev/publisher just gives up and "gives back"
