Well, over a long enough period, you will get about 3.5-4% interest rate, which is fair enough for a secure investment.
And yes, there is the added bonus of "gambling" without risk. Just possibly nice little surprises each month. 😊

That rate isn't relfective of real world returns at all though. Not only have two thirds of accounts have never actually won because the required timeline for the average owner to secure average returns is literally hundreds of years but even those with £20k-50k invested who can expect a win every month will almost always get the £25 because of how prizes are distributed.
It's awful by design to make the government money. In a world with easy access to actual bonds and MMFs, let alone the absurdly generous tax relief on SIPPs, LISAs, ISAs, etc. it doesn't even really qualify as an investment given you lose money against inflation every year unless you're really quite absurdly lucky.
That being said if Trump actually defaults and ruins the world I suppose they'll be the only ones left who can afford bread.

That's the thing with (virtually) risk-free investments. The rates will never be as high as good investment in stocks and ETFs, but with them you can lose all your money whereas here you will always retain your bonds. And as we saw - not only during 2008 and during the Covid crisis, but as you already pointed out, quite possibly with some lunatics running the system into the ground - the stock market has become quite volatile.
As I understand it you can also always take the money out again at no extra cost?

From what i understand it works like a public lottery system?
In Spain we have a public "lottery and bets" institution, but i think it doesn't really equal to that Premium Bonds, as this is like the total sum of all the different "games" to bet and such.
