We had the same thing in NZ imaginatively called "Bonus Bonds", I put my entire life savings into it (as an 9 year old) and probably won a couple of hundred dollars over the years until they closed the scheme down about four or 5 years ago, it was kind of like having a permanent lottery ticket with draws every month or two all selected by Elsie, and when it closed down i got my money back about $100, which really doesn't have the same buying power it did in the 80s

It's not like that as explained on the wiki page (I hope I didn't read it all myself either) you get a permanent code (unless you sell it back) and they pull out the numbers each month and if you match you win a prize could be £25 all the way to £1 million - think of it more like matching your car's number plate - if your plate or in this case code you bought - each code that wins would get a separate prize (like a raffle ticket that lasts forever or until your dead anyway)
