As the title said, I'm thinking about making mods and total conversions for games and I want to know which of these games is easier to mod: Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, or Half-Life? See, the game I want to make is a fan-game based on idea I had (Think Zootopia but as a FPS that plays like a mixture of Al Pacino's Heat and Battlefield). Granted, I will be doing basic stuff first just to cut my teeth in the field but that is my dream idea. So, which game is easier to mod?

Half-Life, of course. Valve built half their empire on mods.

It's probably a good idea to join a modding team. You'll have less control / input as to the final product, but you'll be able to learn from people more experienced than you

That's my big issue: I kinda want full control over the mod (call me picky).

Then do it yourself (I encourage it). It will take longer, but ultimately be more rewarding. Most mods are open source so you're free to pick through other's work to learn.

That's fine, just harder. You have three choices:

1) start on your main project, spend a lot of time just learning to mod, 6 months to a year from now realize how much you did wrong and chuck out a huge chunk of what you've already done, and basically start over again, with the knowledge you've learned over the last six months
2) start with a small project, figure out the basics of modding, and be happy when you complete it in 6 months to a year. Then start on your main project with the knowledge you've learned
3) join a modding group, spend a chunk of your time doing shit you don't care about, but learn from more experienced modders. After you've learned enough, strike out on your own. then start your main project.

Pretty much all the same, right?
