also know as the humble mame bundle. (if you dont get it mame is a arcade emu)

I wish it was "mame", but my guess is that they're using DotEmu's own emulator, and that one is not great.

Definitely. MAME is not permissable for commercial use like DOSBox, for example, is.

The full romsets are included in this Humble Bundle, and can be used in MAME. This bundle is pretty awesome because you can get fully licensed arcade-perfect ROMs and NEOGEO BIOS that you can use in MAME or other emulator of your choice.

"...you can get fully licensed arcade-perfect ROMs and NEOGEO BIOS that you can use in MAME or other emulator of your choice."

This is really interesting. Now I'm considering this bundle just for this. I played many of these games in the arcades when I was a kid, so there's some nostalgia when I see these titles, although I wasn't sure how they were handled in this bundle.

Although what's really affecting me decision is Humble Bundle itself, because it has been a big disappointment for me lately, with canceled orders for the incorrect reasons, and region-locked games without a warning...

Well, if you lose access to Steam (obvious example: hacker hacks your password), you can't play your games. With DRM-free, you still can play them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But if you lose your humble account and don't have your downloaded game somewhere, you also can't play it. But yeah, that kind of is the only advantage of DRM free for me.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Difference is: if you can't log to Steam, your downloaded game* is useless.
If you can't log to humble, your downloaded game is still working.

*Well, some Steam games are DRMfree.

Most games don't really use Steam's DRM features

except that if steam ever closes shop...and it will, because nothing lasts forever.....your game licenses go bye-bye with it...same with if your account gets hacked by siomeone who deletes your library...or you simply get banned or blocked from steam.

Steam support gave a guarantee that if Steam ever closes You will be able to retain access to all Your purchased games.

This is an urban legened, and last time I called someone out on it the only proof that could be found was a ticket response comment from a Steam tech support monkey. Hardly official. To this day, the EULA still clearly states that you do not own any games on Steam and they are only licensed to you.

This is true, if you are someone that doesn't back up their purchases....I personally backup all my DRM-free purchases onto DVDs, but that's just me, you don't REALLY need a server, but I get that it would be a hassle for some. Still, and again this is just my opinion...it's better to have the option to be able to keep your games even after the service is closed up, than not have that option at all.

Like I said, if given the choice I always pick the DRM-Free path...if I want to play it through steam, I just add a non steam game.

The biggest advantage for me is this (because I didn't see this mentioned) -- I have ALL the games I play in one place at one time, and don't have to go to different sites to download them whenever I want to play (or find the disc backup, etc, etc). On top of that I have store descriptions, forums and guides, and all the other things you've mentioned with the Steam platform. In a lot of cases, you also have a direct link to the developer (in the forums) if something goes wrong with your game.

Another benefit for me is that I can buy my Steam games in an incredible variety of places -- amazon, newegg, GMG, bundlestars, humble, etc, etc, etc ... and still use them all in the same place.

Up until Steam I had two six-foot bookshelves full of retail boxes, manuals, guides, and disc cases. Oh wait, I still have them, they're just in boxes in the basement now LOL.

One other thing -- INDIE GAMES. If it weren't for Steam, I'd be missing out on 100's of amazing Indie titles that would be buried or hidden gems somewhere on the internet. Other people hate Greenlight and the flood of indie games on Steam, but I freaking love it. I'd have to say I've played a lot more indie games these past few years than I've played AAA titles.

Granted, there are a LOT of turds out there in the indie game industry, but there are also some simply amazing titles that would never get any exposure (at least for me) if they weren't released on Steam. In addition, I don't have to go to the developer's site, buy the game, download it, and remember where I got it later (or that I even own it). It's all right there on Steam, with patch notes, forums, and everything. There are a lot of bad games on Steam, but there are also those amazing little titles that would probably slip through the cracks and disappear if it weren't for Steam.

thats because the following (and more):

  1. in steam you own it somewhere as some barely existing license you're able to access as long you have your login + steam is working
  2. DRM FREE ... you save it somewhere, time passes - might as well be pirated/STOLEN lol (even though you have it linked in your purchased humble bundle link or profile (if you happen to still have access to that in 3 - x years from now)
  3. and because you're not going to play it anyway, you were only going to collect it - have fun collecting DRM-Free games, personally i see no difference in pirated games - except that their legitimately acquired & safer ... but thats about it
  4. DRM FREE is a shit label ... and a shit container (on games) - that requires file management, a safe "system", place to be stored and listed in * thats why Steam is convenient ... until their gone or the game simply doesn't work on the OS - but thats another aspect ...
  5. Steam cured me from piracy ... although the amount of games played even decreased since i'm using it instead of handy piracy.

You forgot one very important thing. With DRM-free you are legally allowed to sell the game (second hand), of course provided you do not keep a copy (which would then legally turn into I pirated copy since you've sold your rights to the game). Where on steam you only "borrow" the game, especially since the new license that got put to place after this court ruling against steam (and the likes): http://curia.europa.eu/juris/documents.jsf?num=C-128/11

That sounds great in theory ... but in practice i don't see how that would work accordingly in practice,
(especially in games where their users - kids & carless folks don't know, don't care, won't bother) and ...
1x legit acquired DRM-free copy just turns into theoretically "lots of other" copies.

"personally i see no difference in pirated games - except that their legitimately acquired & safer ... but thats about it"

So the only difference is that they are complete opposites....ok...gotcha..rofl

DRM free is a great thing if it means you can transfer the rights to the game. If it cannot be moved from your Humble or GOG account cannot be resold or given to a friend if you are bored with it then the whole thing is just a marketing gimmick. Oh yes, in case of internet goes down for more than a few hours Steam games are at disadvantage. Also if Steam closes. Or in a zombie apocalypse.

I prefer games NOT on steam personally....Maybe I am weird, but I prefer to actually own the game. It's why if given the choice, I will always order a game from GoG instead of Steam, or buy a ps3 disk instead of ordering a digital copy from PSN....I'm not really sure how people can prefer getting a license as opposed to owning the game...

That said, I think for DRM free emulator games...it's a bit high!

If its a PC game - only Steam.
If its any other console game - only physical disc/cart with box and manuals to keep in collection.

Tbh i trust Valve and Steam a lot more than Sony and their PSN. They all the time get hacked, have trouble with keeping revenue in good standing and they are the first on my list to close down in the future while steam will prolly still go strong.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, they already dropped the PlayStation Mobile support, people who bought games there for their phones or PS Vita can't play them anymore if they didn't download the latest update (when it was available) and they can't be re-downloaded.

Now they're closing the PS Store for the PSP (though you can still access to your purchases and transfer content via PS3 or PC)

The big question is, if SNK releases them on Steam later, would we get Steam keys?

They're very good games, and I've played most of them via emulation, so knowing I'd get them on Steam eventually could sway me into buying them.

Some of the games in the bundle are already on steam, and include a steam key...so, it's not a far fetched idea that they could be released on steam at some point later, and a key added to your account.

I like that most are drm free. I don't like that they are old. I used to play some of them in the arcades. I prefer to stay with their memory than have it shattered by my nowadays standards. The same happened with Prince Of Persia Warrior Within and GTA Vice City. I used to remember them as awesome. Playing them now, showed me how old we both are.
