If it is going to be ported... hate to say this but porting things is not exactly an easy task. It will take some time. As is most groups that do this ( when it comes to mods at least, and lets be honest, it is a mod team that is doing this. ) fail to do what they set out to do when they announce porting something over. Big mistake in my opinion.

Should just finish up what they have to do and release it on what it was originally meant to be released on first. Get it fully done. Then work on the port and/or next project.

This is just a general statement not just aimed at "Black Mesa" but other mod & game development groups out there. Same with translation groups.. seen some out there who set out to do a translation for one game, stop mid way or even when they where almost done, and start working on a new project.. then just end up in that sort of cycle, never finishing anything till they end up disbanding or something along those lines.

yes, http://www.blackmesasource.com/. It's not finished, though. Has a few glitches and still lacks Xen.

"New engine" might mean move from Source 200x into 2013.

"...we were forced to move to another engine..."

Might be a completely different engine than Source.

No, they're going to have two releases - one via Steam ported to a "NEW SECRET ENGINE" and another one as a free download version, based on Source SDK2013.

This is stupid.
They're demanding money for a fan-remake of a game that wasn't even theirs.

The original game is completely playable. I can't believe there are people who are excited for this.

I did.

Yes, they got valve's approval, and yeah the free version is still going to be available but that doesn't change the fact that they're demanding money for a fan-remake.

Just because I don't share your dumb enthusiasm doesn't mean I didn't read the post.

That's pretty ironic coming from you.

You need to get off your high horse and stop assuming everyone who disagrees with you is an idiot, which you do a lot.
You only shifted the conversation because I told you that you were wrong and that I did read the first post. If I agreed with you I doubt you'd care even if I used the word incorrectly.

Stop trying to act like a smartass on the forums.

Until they come into your house with a gun pointed at your head no ones demanding(Look the damn word up, who cares if you saw other people using it, doesn't make them right) anything of you.

Use a different word, hell you could have said "I don't think it is right to charge for this because _ ___ __."

The original is completely playable for some people, in the same sense that peanuts are safe to eat for some people.

I can't play the original. Gives me horrible motion sickness. Hell for this gamer would be being forced to play it for eternity.

Black Mesa is playable for me. So is HL2. Not sure what the deal is with HL1.

If nothing else, I say to each their own.

Oh, I didn't know Half-Life 1 gave people motion sickness. D:
I was wrong then.

I probably cannot play HL1 anymore, either. I think my physical tolerance for certain types of graphics has dropped over the years. Used to, it was just Doom and Quake 1 that made me motion sick, but more older games do it to me these days.

I've been able to narrow it down to various specific causes (and no, they aren't FOV related), but it isn't like anything can be done to address those causes (short of a Black Mesa-like remake).

Yeah I've got the same problem. I used to play games like UT99, HL1 and other oldies but nowadays I get terrible nausea after playing one of those games for more than 30 minutes.

Tried to adjust FOV and framerate but couldn't find a solution so far.

A real shame :/

That's funny, I could play Doom (and Doom 2) but Quake 1 killed me. It wasn't as bad as HL1, but I couldn't get far. And I loved that game. I really tried to fight through it.

Deus Ex did too, until I turned off the view bob. View bob, low framerate, and an FOV that is too narrow or wide are just three of the factors (there are others).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, I've learned over the years that there are so many factors. Every person is different, and is affected by different things. Some causes are even contradictory, such as some people getting when view bob is turned off and other people getting sick when it is turned on.

Lots of dark areas get me, lots of right angles with large flat surfaces, blocky/pixelated textures/sprites, a fairly monochromatic color palette can make the others worse... Changing FOV never really helped me.

Games like Doom and Minecraft are effectively unplayable for me, the effect is so strong. I could probably play them with a third-person view, but the last time I tried to play Doom, I was nauseous within 30 seconds.

They got Valve approval for that and they deserve to be paid for 9 years of hard work.

Wouldn't you want to reward them for the hard work they've done?

"Wouldn't you want to reward them for the hard work they've done? "
No.
There are several fan-projects where the developers have gone unpaid (and they shouldn't in my opinion, but whatever).

It's their own fault for tackling on a big project, hyping it up, and requiring money.

But knowing Valve they'd probably hire them sooner or later.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I disagree, but I see your point.

They have no right to ask for compensation. It's basically fan fiction, and Valve owns the rights. You're 100% right about that. But if Valve said they could make money on it, I don't think it's unreasonable for them to want to be paid for the time they put in. I don't think they're at fault for working on this remake. That's the wrong word, in my opinion. They would be in error expecting to get paid.

And I do hope Valve hires them.

I'm also interested in the precedent. What if a small crack team could remake Deus Ex, with permission from Eidos and Square Enix, and get paid for it? I love the original as it is, but I'd love to see it in the Human Revolution engine. Mainly for the native widescreen support and gamepad support. It didn't make sense to play DX1 with a gamepad, but it doesn't make sense to play HR with a keyboard and mouse (though it is supported). It's a legendary game, and I'd pay for the remake. The original will always be special to me, but I would love to play it in an HD update.

Source 2? No.
It must be Unreal engine, like most hl2 mods that are now stand alone.

Why would Source 2 debut in an non-Valve, indie mod/game?

They've mentioned in thread that it's a Valve engine, otherwise they wouldn't be able to get license.

Except it took them about 42.5 years to release the mod in the first place. Wonder how long until it's on Steam. Half Life 3 will probably be out before then.

It's not going to be ported to a new engine. It's going to use the source engine directly instead of being a mod.

"Over the past year, we have spent a HUGE amount of time porting the game to a new engine and fixing hundreds of bugs."

Well, given the "HUGE amount of time porting the game to a new engine", I think they are.

"Our decision to sell Black Mesa rests on two key points. One is we believe we can make the game even better by having full access to the Source engine."

So I assume that by "new engine" they are either talking about the Source engine or about changes to their scripting.

I agree, it's confusing, it's hard to tell what they really mean, but I agree with movac's interpretation.

I initially thought they were simply updating the version of the source engine they were using. But that surely wouldn't take a HUGE amount of time would it? I don't think they're debuting the Source 2.0 engine (like some people here believe). I guess only time will tell, at least we heard from them.
