Just started playing it too on that mode, so far so good(just rescued Elisabeth), but kinda afraid of the final battle. On my first playthrough(hard) I have to switch to medium, because it was too frustrating, and I was eager to see the end of the game:)
About the ass...kinda meh, I prefer the real ones :)

How is the mode, then? Enemies take and deal more damage and are more accurate? I, for one, dislike such cheap tricks :l

Yeah, there is at least one article online that breaks down why Bioshock Infinite in 1999 mode isn't like FPS difficulty in 1999 in general, nor System Shock 2 in particular (which is where 1999 mode gets its name, as SS2 was released in 1999 and Bioshock series was considered a kind of spiritual successor to the System Shock series.)

What do you mean 'thoughtest boss', that thing is the only enemy close to resembling one. I probably died 2 or 3 times in 1999 mode, by getting 1 shot by snipers within time frame of a second, kinda cheap. I guess you got to use more tactics that work, if you want to die less though.

I already finished the game on hard and 1999 mode and if you use the right tactics (vigors, gear, weapons, etc.) it's not that hard. The final battle is actually pretty easy. Only the siren can really kick your ass. And if you don't use the Dollar Bill vending machines you will have much more money left for upgrades.
