Dear Cult, CG, I have an idea for limiting the entries spam. Other than the points limit you could make a limit of entries per game, or just a limit for how many games you can enter for (like: you can only enter 3 giveaways per day). What do you think about this ? Thanks for your time.

My simple idea:

You get 1 ticket per day and you can save up tickets up to a total of 5. Private giveaways are free to enter.

Yep, something like what I said.

I think the point system is fine except the private giveaways must be free to enter, and more manageable.

Good ????? I woke up and saw 300 points... It currently sux considering there are 1k entries after some minutes in a l4d2 giveaway that's pretty bullshit.

You have 300 points because you don't go and enter more giveaways, your problem

So having 300 points it's a problem :P Anyway, I enter many giveaways so nope ? It sux

The problem is: You're not entering as much giveaways as you can

That's why you think 300 points system is a problem

That's the problem ^ everyone enter every giveaway they can, and not only they ones they want SO IT REALLY SUCKS AND THIS PROVES IT.

I'm still sticking to the 300 points system

At least better than your suggestion

Yes better because you like to enter every giveaway you can. You are just providing more and more informations that benefits to me.

It's stupid to enter giveaway, if you don't even like the game or you won't be playing it...

So because nothing is perfect we shouldn't even bother trying to improve it?

Since the system is fair to everyone as it is, it doesn't really matter much. Skyrim was a large giveaway for a game almost everyone wants. If it were capped at 3 per day, everyone would have still entered for Skyrim. Limiting the entries per game is a bad idea because it would lead to even more people just dumping their points in a game they don't really care about.

When it comes to new, expensive, popular titles you will always be competing against a very large number of people. They only way to reduce the number is to significantly reduce point generation. That would increase your chances for the things you enter, but you would be able to enter fewer things. The net result is that you would have almost the same chance of winning a game in a given period of time, assuming you don't let any of your points go to waste.

@Robibota
just a tip for you if you think it's a stupid idea you should mention why, otherwise no one will pay attention at you.

But anyways what I was going to say may sound rude but if you take a look at the member count, it is going up to fast to high. And with the gifts beeing given away (mostly Portal/Half Life 2 and Humble Bundle) this can't last long.
It may not be fair.. but the ability to join has to stop for a few, or a limit to join a giveaway, or something effective has to happen. Of course this is very nice from people to giveaway games doesn't matter which but there are always the same what just can't last forever.

I would limit it at 200 :D
What's the point of entering ones with >1000 entries?

1 decade ago

That would kill the point of allowing everyone a chance at a prize.

Yeah, maybe, but it would encourage being on the site, checking what's up, it would reward for being quick (that adds to a fun).

SteamGifts is not funny anymore, with all giveaways having >1000 entries.
What's the poing of entering giveaways with such low probability?
Being a member of this site seems like a waste of time now.

Limiting giveaways to 200 entires per copy is a good idea in my opinion.

Sorry, but no, it's a terrible idea. First of all, it would make the point system pointless. Second, people would enter giveaways just because they can, so we'd be getting even farther from the "ideal" of "people only enter games they really want / the game goes to someone who really wants it".

meh i think that like 500 entries cap is good, considering the low chances of getting the game it's pretty fair for everyone

No, in fact, it's LESS fair than the current system, because that gives an advantage to people that can check this site every half an hour. Just look at the current average entries per giveaway. If you put a limit to it, then you have people that can't get in ANY giveaway, or that end up entering in the only few that still have room, despite not being interested in them. (And still, they would most likely still be close to the point cap at all times, making points, as I said, pointless)

This, and similar threads, are just a product of the Skyrim giveaway, and the huge amount of entries there should come to no surprise to anyone, first, because it's the game with the most hype right now, and second, because there has been really few giveaways for it, so everyone jumps at the opportunity. Some people talk as like 5k entries was the norm. It's not.

Is not an entries cap what we need, but a rework of the point system. Now days everyone has enough points to enter just about anything. The super long giveaways don't help either (but again I don't think we should limit the time frame of the giveaways)

Cult actually already proposed this...

Cult's idea

It was proposed in order to stop the number of fakes because people are creating fakes to just generate more points for themselves. No matter what you do you will not increase your odds of winning a game over time.

Fact is there are 25000 members now, get over it. if everyone is only given 3 entries per day there will still be 5000 entries for skyrim.
