I have not played Pokemon since Diamond and I only remember Pokemons as static pictures that move back and forth when doing an action in a battle. I saw Pokemon Sun gameplay and Pokemons look more alive. :O

The first game was Pokemon Crystal for the GameBoy Color. Following that was Emerald for the Advance. From 4th generation (DPP on the DS), all Pokemon spites were animated.

It had animation at the beggining of the battle, not animated moves

The animation, IIRC, was just a little pre-combat thing of just a handful of frames. Nothing terribly impressive at all, but it gave them a bit more personality than mere static sprites.

Pokemon Sun uses 3D models instead of sprites.

Since Crystal, every 3rd edition had animated sprites, then HeartGold and SoulSilver came, and it became the norm on 5th Gen
