Thanks everyone for the help!

I found a model that can fit in more then one category: its a 32inch 4k monitor, at 60, but i found out it can be overclocked to 75hz at 1440p; That way i can just save the alternative resolution and switch between then... and hopefully i may be able to squeeze more hz at 1080p, wouldnt look good at 31,5in up close but could be interesting after ragequitting in a mp game lol.
Plus its flat with good color range at 10bit, i will probably get back at photo editing with it.

In the end its still a compromise and size was a factor. 27 is smaller then i wanted anyway but i would happily go 27 with 144hz at 1440p, the one option that is unavailable for me (literally).

Thanks for the help!

=============================================================================
Long story short: my country sucks at hardware, overpriced and limited in options.
i finally built a new pc but i cant get the sweetspot i wanted (1440p, 120hz or more) ...so, compromises

What you think would give the best gaming experience overall?
-27 1080p high refresh (144, even 240)
-27 1440p 75hz
-34 (21:9 ultrawide) 1080p 75hz ips
-32 4k (60hz) VA

Mostly im torn between the age old resolution vs refresh rate, and for me size matters, nothing below 27.
I game everything, from eye candy singleplayer to competitive multiplayer- i lean more toward sp but i really love the mp games im into, some i always go back to (tf2 for example)...

what i was looking for was the best overall experience and a real feeling of upgrading. I wanted to get away from 1080p but also to finally get more hz and 75 is barely over 60...

What do you guys think? Overall, or what you would choose if you had these choices? Is refresh rate or resolution overrated?

PS: ignoring ppi or monitor distance- no matter the choice i have lots of room to game or work at any distance really.

What you would choose or recommend?

27 1080p 240hz VA
27 1080p 144hz ips
27 1440p 75hz VA(ips-like)
34 (21:9 ultrawide) 1080p 75hz ips
32 4k (60hz) VA

I forgot to add: i can play at 4k native more or less (some settings fiddling etc).
Im runing on a rt 5700 xt +ryzen 5 3600

The only experiences i had was with 1080p and a bit on a 4k tv. Never with higher-refresh besides seeing some monitors running games at a store. Nor freesync/g-sync.

Given how the 5700xt works, at least for now, even with vsync turned off the gpu underclocks at 60fps capped (no freesync)- and in a handfull of games that means framedrops wich i hate (anything bellow 60 irritates me).

I'm gonna shock you a bit by saying that your entire list is wrong, because at 1080p and anything beyond 24 inches will look pixelated if you're sitting in a desk range. So you gotta replace those 1080p monitors with something up to 24 inches maximum to make that list valid.

You have to weight your needs depending on the games you enjoy playing mostly. If for example you're playing online competitive first person shooters then you have to aim for high refresh rate monitors! Ultrawide on the other hand is great for watching movies, and playing story rich games.
Therefore, it's not fair for you to tell you get this or that. It's up to your own priorities to decide (and your budget).

I can live with that (kinda). I have used 1080p tvs in the past (32 and even a 39), out of necessity, of course at a higher distance... as well as 24 closer. And sure i can see pixels in some fonts (including explorer), but outside that and bad jpegs... im used to it.

27+ asks for 1440p i agree, but im at least used to that kind of ppi. I doubt i could even consider it if i had a higher res monitor before.

A problem im having is size- i actually started looking for monitors bigger then 27 (no higher then 32), before i found out how out of options i was. The only in between i have available is 28 at 4k(60hz), but with that i would go with a 32 inch.
I only started considering 27 because of that...
Its not just sitting- i lay down to watch movies/series/youtube frequently, both at the desk as in a couch right beside it. Maybe i end up getting a tv besides the monitor in the future, but if could do both in one panel would be easier for me (and cheaper).

24 dont quite cut it for me. I have an old and partially damaged 24inch 1080p i used for many years. I dusted it off recently due to necessity (also to compare), and while i could live with a 24 panel its just too lacking for me.

Besides watching media in gaming i love imersion- the more of my personal fov filled the better. I have played way closer then average viewing distances in the past because of it, but getting closer have a limit

The ideal would be a high refresh ultrawide monitor then, but... you don't want to see their price range... :(

I think the safest bet would be to aim for at least an IPS panel to get some decent color reproduction as well as viewing angles and the highest refresh rate your budget can get you. Mind that in order to take advantage of those rates your GPU also has to hit these fps as well. You will also get a smooth desktop experience while moving windows, smooth mouse pointer movement etc (but that's something most people don't even bother to take into consideration).

The priority thing is my problem too: i dont have it. If i could i would get both.
Feels like someone telling me to choose sugar or salt for life. Not the best comparison but it gives the idea. And i know that with these choices im going to have a salty or too sweet experience.

Im with really bad choices here. At one point i compared prices of monitors and the least overpriced was like 200 usd more expensive here- usually its near double or double the price in dollars. qhd for example theres only a 27 one (75hz) i can buy, a 32 one i cant and a 25 (or 27) qhd 144hz thats nearly 1700 usd... and im squeezing my budget at around 570 usd.

And thats like the ony 3 in the entire country- importing the prices get even crazier.
Its insane here.
Here 80% of the choices are 1080p TN panels, 10% very badly rated monitors, 5% overpriced 1080p, 2% 4k (somehow cheaper then the 3 qhd monitors) and 3% insanely overpriced monitors (even some 27 1080p).

Its really depressive. It got worse now with the covid pandemic, but sadly i need to (im currently without a monitor)

I think aiming for IPS first and adding (depending on your budget) the rest of the features is the safest way to go.
If the price difference of an IPS @ 75Hz vs an IPS @ 144Hz is not that big then obviously you should buy the 2nd.

For the record, TN panels are not always bad! There are some high quality TN monitors out there that have amazing color quality, but still bad viewing angles :)

Anyway, when you end up on the exact brand and model, drop a post here before you pull the trigger to check all the small details together.

Good to know, that may be worth a second combing to see if theres a interesting TN option, but only over pricing... what i really wanted (qhd 100+ hz) isnt available.

What about overclocking monitors? you know if its possible to do in a 4k 60hz monitor?

Don't expect much from overclocking a monitor, unless you'll be happy if you go from 60Hz up to 75Hz.
I don't think that you could tell the difference at these rates! It's more like a placebo effect if the gap is so small.

I've read about some extreme cases such as overclocking a 144Hz monitor up to 240Hz, but there are some glitches here and there (skipping frames etc).

Just go with whatever is cheapest. The differences between different monitor refresh rates and the like is marginal unless you are into highly competitive multiplayer stuff.

I'm using a 15 year old monitor....works fine for me.

Are you buying online or at physical retail stores? In my country, international online stores like Amazon & Newegg are way cheaper

Heres the opposite. We have one of the highest (at one point was the highest) import taxes in the world. Not long ago buying from china was worth it, even more so if the package slipped past taxing fiscals. At one point amazon was worth it on some hardware.

now the fiscalization and rules tightened and amazon decided to pre-tax everything- plus our inflation got crazy worse and my income remains the same. And China... well, even with the tigther fiscalization some stuff slips by, but a huge monitor box? zero chance

The import tax over hardware and anything digital here is +60% of the price

my sister has a 27" 1440p 144hz eizo display and it's pretty awesome.
i don't care much for the 144hz but size and resolution are really nice.

i have a two screen setup: one hp 24w 24" (bought new almost 2 years ago) & one age old benq 22" something (got it used & cheap and didn't care about the rest). both 1080p 60hz.
i'm happy with the new one and i don't mind the old one. but i regret not getting the 27" 1080p version of the hp 24w. it starts feeling small...

don't forget: you can always get something used if the price is right.
but i wouldn't really buy a new 1080p display anymore.
also at 144hz or even 240hz you need a lot of power to drive it. that means a lot more noise and heat without any real benefits.

In my opinion - 1440p/75hz is most optimal choice if you play more sp than mp

I am using a 27" 1440p IPS monitor. To be honest, i should had went for 24' instead, its too big for me. if you are looking for an upgrade, go with 1440p. if you are looking for minimal upgrade, go for 1080p 144hz.

Thereby, the optimal upgrade imho, is 24' 1440p 144hz.
Cheers, Have a good weekend. :)

Well, i went from 24,5" 1080p 75Hz to 27" 1440p 144Hz. For me is 1080p too low for 27" (4K too much) and 144 Hz a little big luxury with my 5700 XT (75 Hz recommended).
So probably 27" 1440p 75 Hz.

I would never go below 32" or 4k again but easily could go over 60hz especially if I played more fast games. But that was the price to pay if you wanted it to look decent couple years ago.

I'm using LG 24GM77-B so I would vote for any 24 or 27 + 1080p + 144hz :)

1080p 144hz IPS. If you have spare processing power put it into supersampled AA (the best looking AA there is).

The sweet spot atm for me is 1440p with 144Hz @ 27 inch.
Since I got one I will never go back to 1080p or 60Hz.

"Thinking from the games you play" (to match the tasks you use often)
Graphic performance: Sufficient for general games
You like "TF2".
In that case, the FPS value and the monitor refresh rate will be important.

-27 1080p high refresh (144, even 240)

Is this okay?

However, if your eyes are getting tired and you are no longer interested in the TF2, you may want to choose a larger monitor.
Speaking of tired eyes, VA LCD is painful.IPS is good.

cant you go and look at monitors your self?
1080p @27" feels like a stretch ^^. but i will always prefer high refresh rate.
just make sure you can run games at said FPS and AdaptiveSynch is available

I'm currently running 27 1080p 144hz ips and love it. Based on votes, the majority of other people are as well.
My previous monitor was a 24 1080p 60Hz, but it was non-LED based, so it was getting a bit dull for me after owning it for about 8 or so years.

Some others are talking about 1440p (or better), but I've not had any experience with that beyond using other people's computers for work, and not gaming, so i'm not sure of the advantages.

So, these are your options because of your budget and limited supply or because your system won't be able to get 2K 120Hz+?
If it's the second option i would still suggest you get a 27 inch, 2k 144Hz IPS monitor because it's something like an investment. You can keep the monitor for many years but it's easier to change your graphics card, especially after Nvidia announced their prices for the 3000 series.

I would look into ips without silvering (like graphic eizo) or va 240hz, probably now best are on q-led but recently i didn't read newest info about monitors, my info is from few years ago. Quality of display is more important from size or resolution for example. edit: i wanted to write "120hz or more" not necessarily 240hz..

Right now I have 24" 1ms 144Hz 1080p TN (obviously).
But, you know, this 1ms bullshit is... bullshit. There is an obvious ghosting.
For my next monitor I'd like 24-27" 2-5ms 75-144Hz 1080-1440 IPS/VA.

Ed. Forgot to mention: I need 90+ FPS only in very few fast-paced games (Warframe, DOOM). In regular games 60 is the sweet spot for me.

Just found out one of the 32 4k models i could buy is overclockable to 75hz at 1440p, maybe more at lower resolutions.

Since it filled more then one niche i was looking for... thats it. I hope i wont regret it.
