Just saying, normal breath isn't the minty smell of the toothpaste. Since we always have an open passage to our stomach, the smell that comes up after cleaning your mouth is usually from your stomach acids.

It comes from that as well. It's just that after you've extensively cleaned your teeth then the first bad breath comes from that. Usually around 15 minutes after you've brushed (at least that's as long as I can keep a minty breath from brushing :D)

Maybe this will help: If you floss and use mouthwash then your mouth will smell better than the breath of most others.

I also have a tendency to chew gum while i'm in public. Helps your oral hygiene, tastes good and makes your mouth smell like the taste for as long as you chew it ;D

I eat four times a day, and I floss and brush my teeth every time after I eat. I just can't stand having my mouth "dirty".

how do you manage this in a workplace/school/restaurants?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In school I'd have one of two options: I could floss and brush my teeth in the school bathroom and have everyone looking at me like I was a freaking monster, or wait about one and a half hour before going out and then brushing my teeth. I would pick the second option - not that it made me happy, but eating in class was already enough attention for me. In college things were much easier, as I could eat, floss and brush my teeth without any compromises. I don't work, so I can't really talk about that, but I would probably find a way. And it just occurred to me I haven't gone to restaurants in many, many years. But I guess restaurants aren't so bad, because you're constantly eating stuff and, unless you go somewhere after, it's not long before you get home and are able to do your stuff. Sorry I basically can't answer half your question.

I have a pencil case with dental floss, a toothbrush, toothpaste and some toothpicks. Since I have a backpack with me pretty much everywhere I go (which is also where I store my packed meals), it's easy to take it around. And wow, how did someone got your paste in his cloth? lol

If you mean the toothbrush, after using it I just wave it around with enough speed and for enough time until it gets dry. Takes about 10 seconds I would say.

Be sure to wait a minimum of 30 minutes after eating/drinking anything acidic. This includes soda, oranges, lemons, etc etc etc. Acidic drink/food softens the enamel and brushing while in such a state destroys the enamel.

This is negated if you simply rinse your mouth with a few drinks of water.

I'm not sure how to answer. I mean, I never had any trouble with it. I just do it like I do for every other tooth. I don't roll the floss around my fingers like you usually see on tv. I use my thumbs and my pointing fingers to get the floss precisely where I want it.

I cant even imagine how much time i would spend brushing my teeth if i am doing it every time i eat something. 2 times seems enough for me.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

With today’s rampant use of refined sugar, I assure you 2 times is likely not enough. It’s only for a minute or two after eating, you don’t HAVE to stand in front of the bathroom mirror. You can brush anywhere, keep a spare toothbrush in your car and in your bag.

I have a nutrition plan and i try to eat 6 times a day, i eat mostly healthy foods and i stay away from any kind of sugar( at least when its avoidable) so i dont worry that much but i suppose you are right, it wont hurt anyone if i brush my teeth more often.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's easier if you have a nice nutrition plan in place. I, for example, eat every ~3ish hours. Because of that you'll never see me snacking, ever. So I only brush my teeth after actual meals.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes actually i also have a nutrition plan, i eat every 3-4 hours. Every meal i have is an actual meal and not some kind unhealthy snacks. But in the end i brush my teeth twice a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Of course if i feel that my mouth smells or its dirty i will make an exception on my rule. Maybe you are right and i should increase my numbers...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'll be entirely honest with you. I've been brushing my teeth like I explained above for many years now, but the reason I started was, one day I just went to talk to someone and their breath was horrible. And I mean absolutely horrible. I wasn't even too close. Then I started fearing the same thing could happen to me. BOOM mouth hygiene through the roof. So maybe you should increase your numbers... (just a friendly advice).

Yes i think i should have mentioned that i HATE when my mouth smells, it feels disgusting even for me so when that happens i will go immediately to brush them. Many people think being clean means taking a bath but they cant realise that's not enough.
Edit: I should mention that as long as you eat healthy and frequent enough your mouth smells a lot less.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's true. But when I started paying attention to this, I noticed my mouth would start smelling bad a lot sooner than I could realize. And when it was bad enough for me to actually notice, I imagined how many people would have already noticed before me.

Usually after breakfast and before going to sleep. Twice a day is not too much too ask, though I must admit, that sometimes I skip the evning, but I haven't had any troubles with my teeth for a couple of years so it's fine. Doing less, like not brushing for days results in bad teeth and it's not really worth it considering it takes 2 minutes of your time a session. Taking a shit takes longer and imagine you wouldn't wipe your ass afterwards, it'll kinda be akward, just like not brushing your teeth at least once a day.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

1-2 times a day and it really should be 2 but sometimes i just don't have the time or energy. I floss once or twice a week unless something gets stuck wich is also not enough. I use mouthwash every day.

The question shall be Is not how often u brush your teeth , but does your tooth past contains fluoride or not

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why is this important? Is it better if it has fluoride?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There are ppl that avoid fluoride because it can be poisonous. Like me, I switched to xylitol. That "sugar" works wonders even when consumed in candies :) Though I made switch mostly because I like xylitol more than consider fluoride dangerous.

On other hand everything is poisonous. Its all in the dose.

Brushing 2x a day with flossing daily is the recommended amount. Also important is to NOT rinse after brushing as fluoride is water soluble.

in the morning every workday, also almost every evening

it's a big improvement because a few years ago I barely brushed them at all, hell, there were times when I didn't brush for months

though zero bad teeth so far, genetics I guess (28 years old)

I thought I was the only one like this. I am wondering now what the hell was I thinking when I was in high school and so, for not doing it as I should have!

I am just hopeful that I did not (re)start brushing too late now, although I have no problems with my teeth so far. High-five for genetics! :D

Many times per day, I didn't check "twice" for a timing reason.
That is, I wake up at 11 AM usually or later, due to work issues and such, so I always stay up late and I can't really say that I brush my teeh in the morning often xD
Though, I also brush them every single time I do something that does not relate to my work in the afternoon, and always before sleeping of course (otherwise they hurt, I don't know why).
So it's often three times a day! Or more, if I have to go home more than one time during the day!
By the way one thing that I always ask to everyone is how many teeth do they have. It's strange but I'm super curious about that xD

I hate brushing teeth, it always makes me gag and ruins the taste of food for 20 mins.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What about brushing your teeth makes you gag?

And do you use mouthwash? I've found that rinsing with (alcohol free) mouthwash and then drinking some water washes away 99% of the toothpaste, such that I can even drink orange juice afterwards and barely notice an issue.

Some people have a sensitive gag reflex. Putting something like a toothbrush in their mouths can possibly cause it to happen.

I'm not surprised, that sounds very unpleasant.

Why do you brush your tongue? It's not something any of my dentists have ever recommended. Might I suggest rinsing with mouth wash as a much more pleasant alternative?

Permalink

To get rid of bad breath and coloration, it's literally the only reason I brush my teeth.

Mouthwash is also unpleasant, it burns my entire mouth and tastes awful. I'd rather deal with gagging.

Have you tried alcohol free mouthwash from Crest? Try something like this: https://crest.com/en-us/products/crest-pro-health-advanced-extra-cleaning-mouthwash No burn, pleasant taste.

Are you serious? You should definitely be brushing your tongue. Your dentist will 100% tell you to do that, and even offer you a tongue scraper (yes, they exist). The bacteria in your mouth is not limited to your teeth. A lot of bad breath stems from the back of your tongue.

Huh, I would have thought mouthwash would take care of that. Well, I'm due for a checkup this month, so I'll ask my dentist about it.
