Yep, that was my first Steam package too. I'm not even surprised since I already remembered that :)

I also started with the Orange Box for my current Steam account. My first account had Half-Life and the Counter-Strike beta (mod).

It was a bundle actually (HiB V), so: Limbo, Psychonauts, Amnesia: the Dark Descent and Sword & Sworcery. The only one of those I've played on steam was Limbo, the other 3 I opted to install the DRM-free version, I guess I should replay them on steam someday.

Primordia, as recommended by my then-boyfriend. I enjoyed it a lot, it's one of my favorite point-n-clicks

Duke nukem forever. Pretty much using Steam because of it.
I'm surprised people don't know what their first game was, you can always see what you got and when by going here

Then please steel yourself for a shocking revelation - I did not know about this feature. I have actually tried to find this information (and associated game keys) a number of times during my 10 years on Steam and I still can't figure out how to get there via the Steam menu.
You helped me figure out why my first two Steam games (that I just learned about from the current Steam event) are ones that I was never interested in playing - they were included as a promotion with an ATI graphics card that I bought (Radeon X1950 Pro if memory serves me correctly).

ATI Half-Life 2: Deathmatch / Half-Life 2: Lost Coast Promo?

:-) Have you played them? I'm considering giving the Lost Coast a try just for this event but I think Death Match will forever languish in my library as an unplayed game. I wonder what games I was playing back then that inspired me to modify my computer. I should still have them around here, so I might dig through my box of old goodies if I feel energetic and curious enough. I know I bought Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl around that time, and not many others (for PC, at least - I was also playing on the PS2 at that stage). Those are still a couple of my favourite games, and I've already been considering looking for my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. disc after watching some youtube vids of a couple of mods I haven't played.

I played a lot of Half Life 1 deathmatch back in the day, but never got into Half Life 2 DM. Lost Coast is more of a tech demo if I remember correctly. I played through it -- I think it took less than an hour.
I somehow ended up with Call of Pripyat and Clear Sky, but no Shadow of Chernobyl on Steam. I played a bunch of it off Steam but didn't finish it, so never played the other two, though they are on my ever-growing backlog that I'll probably never get around to playing, as much as I wish I could.

Yep, I played Lost Coast last night and it is a short mission/level cut from Half-Life 2, which they apparently released as a technical demo, as you say. There was an optional audio commentary from various Valve personnel (including GabeN) explaining the technical features (e.g. High Dynamic Range lighting and light refraction through water or textured glass) and game design philosophy at relevant points in the map, which I found reasonably interesting.
I never got into competitive multiplayer gaming. Were you playing Half-Life deathmatch at LAN parties or at a college or something? I still had dial-up internet in those days. The first game I actually bought on Steam was Counter-Strike: Source (after I got an ADSL2+ connection) but the toxic community and hackers scared me off that pretty quickly. I've heard that the community is a bit better nowadays because it's more fashionable to be an arsehole on CS:GO, but I haven't been game to try it. I've tentatively tried a couple of other online multiplayer games but don't normally enjoy them because I prefer stealthy exploration shooters (like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.) over the sensory overload twitch shooting style of most modern online multiplayer games, and I am still hamstrung by geography and internet technology (typically 100 ms ping for Australian servers not in my city and 200+ ms for non-Australian servers).
I've also picked up the second and third S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games on Steam but not the original (yet). I still like the original one best (with STALKER Complete mod and SC Realistic Weapons add-on for authentic but improved vanilla experience) but have also been thinking about reinstalling Call of Pripyat and trying the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Chernobyl mod, which I think adds the Shadow of Chernobyl maps, amongst other things.

Fear 2, followed 3 month latter by Fear 3. Also physical copies needing Steam acc to activate.
Funny as I didn't have internet so went to my brother's place to register them and played offline,
The day I registered Fear 3, was during the 2011 Holiday sale (the one with coal drops), and I got a free copy of Half Life 2 Ep 1

Yeah. For a couple of years there I was very proud of my collection of $5 games.

Wasn't my first, but I remember when I got it. That was the Christmas day they gave it out for free and people crashed steam because of everyone trying to get it too. At least I got it in time. :P

So using this new Spring Cleaning event, I got to see what my first steam game I had was. And it wasn't what I thought it was.
So, as usual, I got to thinking. What was your first steam game?
Mine was Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. Game had SUCH potential, but the game breaking bugs killed it for me.
So, what was your first steam game?
Edit- Added a small GA for you all as thanks for making this the most successful topic I have ever made on SG.
