People tend to forget that Mexico is part of North America.

It alwasy bums me out whenever these kind of events are promoted, and they count both the US and Canada, but never Mexico :'(

That's inaccurate, at least relative to the considerations that would be relevant for this circumstance; Mexico is actually considered to be placed in Central America, rather than North America. According to the UN (and by most any other cultural/poltiical/economic consideration), Central America is defined as all sections of the North American continent falling south of the US.

And if that feels arbitrary to you, consider how much more arbitrary the divide between Europe and Asia is (relative to country or country grouping associations)- even moreso, given how the culture doesn't shift as substantially and quickly as it does between Mexico and the US, when moving from, say, Romania to Ukraine, or Ukraine to Russia. (By strict considerations, the geographical division of Europe and Asia is defined by the border created by the Ural mountain range, and progressing with that associative positioning downward from there, but that reference point typically is not used as a guideline when considering cultural, political, or economic divides.)

These kind of divides become all the more substantial when considering things against the framework of Steam, where there are even more geopolitical [eg, censorship, marketing restrictions, necessitated local control over regional business branches, etc] and/or economic divisions between regions to consider [due to regional pricing, promotion histories, purchasing trends, etc].

So, by most any conception (that is to say, continental plate considerations aside), Mexico is not part of NA and, as far as these kind of promotions go, there's some fairly intuitive additional reasons for Mexico's exclusion from NA+EU based frameworks (at least, in the sense of being in line with how Steam divisions operate in general).

TL;DR version: Mexico is Central America, and its difference in economics and culture mean that it's not only typically split from the rest of NA for considerations, but that it may perhaps also understandably be split from the otherwise comparable economical reference points of the US, CA, EU, and so forth, when video game promotions are being considered.

Still totally fine to be bummed out about it, but it's not as simple as Mexico being "forgotten". In fact, typically exclusions are caused by restrictions from the country in question, due to assumed organizational issues, or because local distribution is handled by a different publisher that isn't as easy to rope into the promotion. So while it's possible Steam is excluding Mexico willfully [It is Valve, after all], there's enough cause to consider a more external explanation first.

In this case, as SpaceClick suggested just below, it's likely entirely due to marketing and distribution considerations.

Theres also taxes and laws about raffling/giving away/importing/tariffs that can be a hurdle from country to country.

Mexico has a limit on how much value of electronics can be brought in before they start demanding money.

Probably. Was accepted as well and the last purchase I made on Steam itself was June 2020.

Why is it lame that they want to reward the people that spend money in their store ?

You had the better prices on other sites, instead the steam deck chances.

And i see that your purchases on other sites counted.

So it's really lame :-D

Since it specified "Steam" purchases, i assumed it had to be through the Steam store, and thus kinda lame, as using Steam keys shows you're basically sending Valve money but through a 3rd party.

But yeah, it's not lame at all, other than the wording could have been done better, or maybe included an asterisk to state any steam keys purchased in that time, were considered Steam purchases.

Valve earn more with purchases in their own shop as from 3rd party sales.
And of course they want that people use their shop instead a other one to buy the games.

As each other company on this planet.

I dont think it really matters, as Valve gets 30% from the publisher anyways, and may make a small portion more through their own store, but probably only on games that arent on sale.

As long those had made purchases, are in good stand and isn't F2P (the purchase pretty much removes the limited anyway if I recall correctly). They would be elegible as sad as it i; yet again, the purchase period might be precisely to prevent people from making new accounts and spend RIGHT NOW in order to have more accounts to enter those.

Unsure of the exact requirements, but even though i didnt "buy" anything on the Steam Store in the timeframe required, i did add a couple dozen games i got from bundles and such.

So maybe just adding a game to your account in the time frame is enough to be included in the giveaway?

But i have not technically made a purchase on Steam since 2017.

What i'm thinking is that they include steam keys obtained elsewhere, as "Steam" purchases. As i've only added keys from bundles, giveaways, and a White Dwarf magazine promo for Warhammer.

your steam wallet can also get locked if you dont buy anything from the steam store. my friend cant use his steam wallet that he made from selling TF2 items because its been so long since they purchased a game. it was under 2$ of wallet. i would assume he can still buy from the market

It's other way around, you don't get locked from using wallet on steam store, only market. (Which buying from store using wallet reactivates).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know of a friend who had their wallet locked (for store purchases, but not market purchases), with Steam telling them they had to make a new purchase through a non-wallet medium before being able to make purchases in the store through wallet again, despite them still being able to interact with market fully.

So I dunno, that seems to attest to Vahid's friend's experience being as described. I know my friend had a barely used account that they hadn't used for market or store purchases for some years, so it may be some kind of weird inactivity response. Don't really remember if there was anything else to contextualize their experience. Well, I know they don't use two-factor authentication, but not sure if that'd be relevant to the matter.

If Valve determines, in its sole discretion, that a particular winning entry in the Giveaway was not made in good faith, Valve may refuse to distribute a prize to that entrant, even if the entry was previously announced as being a winner.

They will probably just say "sorry, not sorry" and redraw :D I suppose they think checking winners will be easier then making a system that checks entrants initially.

Considering the show is usually around 3 hours long... that's like 130k USD worth of Steam Decks. That's pretty bonkers.

Comment has been collapsed.

To be honest for a company that has revenue of several billion dollars, this isn't anything big.

Can't find any precise info on their actual profit, but I doubt 100+k would make a huge dent. In a way that could be seen as investment in marketing. More people start using steamdeck and feed one of the most powerful marketing forms - word-of-mouth.

I remember local chain store had a raffle for a brand new Audi A4. Worth 50k or so. Seemed like crazy. But when you actually start putting the numbers together - with expected amount of participants and amount of money needed to pay to take part (and calculating profit roughly) they brought those 50k in very fast. And the raffle was active for several months. Overall profit was waaaaay more then the value of the car. With amount of marketing that was generated and with amount of people that chose their store over others was a huge success

Of course, it's not a big deal in their overall books either way... but it's still a fairly big giveaway.

They could easily have made it 10-20 Steam Decks and it would have pulled quite a lot of people regardless. I believe The Game Awards did do some giveaway for PS5 or something when they launched, but that was like literally one console. That's usually the level that these type of giveaways are at.

I'd say that doing one every minute is a bit above and beyond what they needed to do to achieve their marketing goal. And they also didn't have to do the 512gb version. So I'd say it's still a pretty generous giveaway in the grand scheme. Their goal is of course to promote the product and Steam, but how they go about it says a lot.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh yes, of course. Not arguing that - this is definitely above and beyond. My expectation would have been one for the whole event as well.

Perhaps they are running in some problems with sales and they want to boost the number of users drastically.

You said it! What kind of bullshit is that? The show last year was around 3 and a half hours long, so if we go by that estimate they can afford to giveaway around 200 Steamdecks, but cannot be bothered to try and distribute it in the to the rest of the regions that have not received an official release yet, where there is people willing to buy one? Thats not capitilism, that is Valve being a bunch of dicks to the rest of the world.

There is a long list that is on limited account https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/71D3-35C2-AD96-AA3A
From what I can see on my other account the only thing I noticed was that I couldnt use steam market. Other things on the list I tried worked.

Edit: and it says I can use market if I do any transaction. Not that I need $5. So dont think account is limited, but just needs to buy whatever to use market again.

You don't just lose access to the market.
My gf has an account I created for her where I activate keys I get in bundles that she might be more interested in than me like grand strategy games. She doesn't buy anything on Steam herself but I got her a game last Xmas sale.
During the summer sale, she collected the cards and wanted to trade them with me and she kept getting an "error 26". I didn't really look into it because I don't care about cards or badges.
At the end of the sale, I got her a game on Steam. Boom, suddenly she was able to trade cards again.

I don't know. It's all very odd because ofc Steam gives as little info as possible on these "errors"

What I ment was that you have to spend 5 EUR/USD, then your account becomes non limited.
You cant to theese things with a limited account: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/71D3-35C2-AD96-AA3A

BUT, if you dont spend any money in a year, you cant sell any item in market. (Thats what I ment by loose access)

I havent bought any steam game since 2018 on other account. I can do anything on the limited account list, but havent made any transactions in over a year so I have to buy something in order to use market again.
