Hey everyone! There's no real point to this thread, it's mostly for me to vent. So if you're here just for the GA, skip on down to the bottom :) No judgement.

I'm currently working as a Business Developer in a very small project/program management consulting firm. That basically means my company makes sure other companies do the work they need to in the right amount of time and without spending too much money, and my job is to sell our services to other companies. The pay is good and the work is decent, but it's not what I want to do.

I really want to get into Game Design. It's been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember and has always been greatly rewarding for me. I have worked on a few small games (mostly in college) and have taken away more and more from each experience, but I never considered it as a career for several reasons; the biggest one being I fear being judged. Coming from a family of lawyers, engineers, and doctors, I'd feel like they (and other people I know) would think of me as immature and unprofessional. I have always been the fun, childish one of the family, but that was always seen as good because it was part of my personality, not my work life. They have been very supportive of my decision to change careers, but I still feel like this is a mental block for me.

There are already a few companies I am zeroing in on, and I have applied to several jobs, so I am moving forward! Now the biggest hurtle I need to leap is finding a contact in the industry to talk to. I will do a much better job of selling myself in person than my resume can do when competing against a sea of applicants, and I likely have a lot more flexibility when it comes to type of work. So I'm looking for ways to build my network and hoping to finally find that one person that will be the key to landing a job.

That's it for my rant, so I hope I didn't bore you. Hopefully in a year I will have another update with a new job title! Here's your GA:

GA: Dragon Ball Xenoverse
Reqs: Level 2
End: Fri May 13, 2:30 ET (UST -5:00)

Enjoy! And please bump!

I'm impressed you want to leave the security of a good job, I don't doubt from your apparent attitude you'll put yourself out there to find something, it' will only be lack of opportunity that holds you back

Good luck! I myself want to get into game development and I'm trying to learn as much as I can for that while I'm still at uni, even though I should have probably went for Computer Science degree instead of Engineering (well who knows maybe I'll end up making the next big console xD)

Do what makes you happy. You spend too much time at work to do something you're not interested in.
More importantly, if you're not passionate about your work you won't go far.
unlike some, I'm talking from direct and indirect experience, including my friends. and, again unlike some, I've actually done it. I quit a job with "decent" pay and traded it in for something I'm passionate about. Best decision I've ever made
feel free to add me if you want to chat about it

Good luck. I hope you find the job you want and be able to build a career from it. It's also good that you have something else to fall back to that you know you can do well, even if you like it less. That safety net should allow you to go try your hand at what you really want without worrying too much about it.

If people are going to judge you for being a game dev, try to make them understand and change their opinions. If they won't, you don't need them in your life. It will only make things worse for you in the long run. Their comments will bring you down and your games will suffer as a result. No one needs people in their lives that constantly makes them feel worse about themselves. Good luck being a game dev! I hope you do great!

Good luck with your career change! I recently went from games to animation/cg, myself :3. Although, we do work on games, too.

Kind of know what you feel, I just finished my college as automatic engineer and 4 years in this school basically killed my interest in that topic. I am kind of good in that ( I think ) but now I decided to expand my interest in graphics, animation and movies. I hope it will work, at least I won't starve to death cause as enginner I'll always find (some kind of ) job. But I think it's worth to try :) good luck to you

Oh and since I'm working as a QA tester for games: getting into gaming business often takes a lot of effort.
It's very helpful if you can switch between jobs (like being able to program or do art stuff as well) and if you got additional knowledge in processes like scrum.

What exactly in game development are you aiming for? Design? Coding? The art or music side of things?
I'm in somewhat of a similar situation, except game dev companies around here are very sparse (or mostly focus on mobile or outsourced stuff). I'm about to graduate university with my Masters, I was actually hunting around university for similarly graduating students who had similar passions, hoping we could team up. Doesn't seem to be happening, though :(
