Hey dear SG community. I'd like to hear your opinions on how to give to those users who also give, not only leech.

So far I've seen many different approaches to achieve that, but I can't say that I've got my favorite so far. Each method has its obvious upsides and downsides to it. Level restriction, is most obvious, but also least effective one. Sgtools are great, but they need to be posted separately. I think group giveaways might be the best approach, but it requires some extra effort to find, join and keep up with the rules of each.

What are you opinions on this subject? 🤔

Bonus question, is it ok to request new winner based on winner ratio? (I didn't even use that option yet).

To make sure my giveaways are not won by leeches (ratio far less then 1.0) I tend to use:

View Results
level
sgtools
groups
whitelist
request new winner
I don't care about that

I simply use a weighted level system. No stress, after all we take also from people who possibly don't care at levels or ratio.
I still have a tiny whitelist to consider that specific selection, since I still give away common games that they may have. If I want to play roles, I set a level that I feel appropriate for the game I give away, with the rarely very top set as my level +1.
It would be cool to chose Public (with levels) + Whitelist so you can include the low levels of your choise.

People's ratios will naturally fall below 1 and the hyperfocus on having a good ratio is strange to me. There are people who exclusively make GAs and never join any, and there are promotional giveaways made by game creators or their acquaintances. Judging people for winning in a giveaway that was made to bring the creator income in some way is strange. If you want to stop bots/hoarders, which are IMO the actual problem, the only way is to just use your blacklist (I explicitly write on my GAs that writing a mass written comment will earn a blacklist for that purpose). Also, people on a lower level might have less money for games, and giving away games to people with a high level, aka those that might have a lot of money for games, seems counter effective for me (obviously some are just experienced users, which is okay in my opinion)

It's a bit complex in my case, as I have developed my system on-the-run, but I'm satisfied with it, and it's quite automatic and simple for me, with one exception, about which later. Basically it's whitelist, groups, level and blacklist selection, in this order of importance.

The ratio and level is far from everything. Actually a lot of decent ratio high level (8-10) folks after I check their profile go directly into my blacklist. Most of them, because they have attained those levels with overpriced shovelware bought from shady shovelware sites for pennies and often counted by SG as not-bundled, at times at 100 times higher CV, than their real purchase price. I've seen lvl 10 accounts, that IMO costed less than $50 to create and after those initial crappy GAs for years have not done any GAs, but are constantly winning new gifts.

My blacklist probably has as many shovelware folks on it, as those with bad ratio. Then there are folks, that create all of their GAs resticted only to their country, but OFC don't mind winning gifts from all around the world, or create all of their GAs to small "exchange" SG groups, but don't mind winning GAs from public and larger groups GAs.

All those folks arrive on my BL after winning one of my GAs or after I check member lists of groups, that I often gift, for folks with lowest ratio of gifts and wins in the group (and checking for those is the only tiresome part of my "system").

Currently my GA spread is approximately as follows: 40% groups, 40% public, 13% invite only (events, trains, support of threads like "Positive thread!"), 7% whitelist only (with actually 40% including whitelist, as almost all my group GAs are also WL GAs). As for wins, WL folks win probably close to 20% of my GAs, as usually with mixed group+WL GAs there are many more entries from groups, than from my 200 💙.

So first comes maintaining the whitelist. I add folks, that I appreciate for different reasons, though first always checking their profiles (SG and Steam) for things, that I don't like. I don't "require", that they add me back. If I see, that someone has added me, I also check their profile, and quite often add them back, but I even had a case or two of putting a person on my BL after this check, due to reasons posted above.

As groups go, the few games I really care about and want to be played, I gift to groups that enforce them being played (in my case Playing Appreciated). Other games go to groups that are somehow connected with the game (a game about cats to cat lover groups, a puzzle game to puzzle groups) or to groups from which I often win to keep a decent balance with them (winning from a group I usually check my ratio with it), and then pretty randomly to different groups, that I support. And some decent games I keep for events and trains.

Stuff, that I don't care too much about goes to public GAs, mostly level 4-6. I do win quite a lot of 1h public GAs, mostly in this level range, so I think, that I also should give something back.

As for the "decent ratio" issue, in most cases I find CV and Real CV ratios above 50% to be OK, if they are not gained by shovelware GAs and if the person is not sitting for years on their level without making any new GAs. With some folks giving a lot more, than taking (kudos to them) we could not all be really close to 100% ratio, and some folks not always can afford to make a lot of GAs.

Thanks for the very in depth post. It shows me that I still have to learn a lot about SG ;)
All in all conclusion from many comments here seems to be convergent with what you wrote. It seems crucial to do many different types of giveaways (public with lvl, group, whitelist).

I don't care leechers or bots, I consider them collectors. Every time I think a game should be played, I give it away in groups like Playing Appreciated, Playing Matter or Play a game you won on Steamgifts.
Even though people mention a lot about gray russian site, I can't find any using google, so I don't care too. Besides, they are gifting games too, even for just their nation, that's enough for me, it's the main reason this website exist after all.
Sb should learn how to not petty.

This is not about people in Russia or Argentina or other cheap Steam region building RCV with region restricted giveaways. Maybe it's unfair but there usually legit games change hands. On the other hand there are fake games coming out on Steam all the time that cost 10 to 40 dollars but at the same time they can be bought for 10 cents in Russian keyshops right on release. 10-40 RCV for 10 cents spent is a huge problem for this site and the mods are generally quite bad at catching these offers as they simply don't have the time/will to monitor these shops it seems. And user reports about these games seem to have a several months (years?) backlog.

When someone can reach lvl10 with a 50 dollar investment or especially when a multiaccounter can get their alts past the 100 dollar account value entry barrier with 50 cent cost per alt that's clearly a problem for this site.

And if somebody only ever gifts unplayable shovelware are they really contributing anything? Well, maybe they do because Steamgifts clearly has a strong meta of gifting each other shovelware just to level up.

Nothing, really. I'm generally horrible at maintaining a whitelist, I impulse add people, while keeping friends, friendly strangers on it. People with horrible ratio but great play%, the list could go on. I'm honored if someone thinks I belong to their whitelist, but I just don't feel like I can make WL giveaways that people would deserve. I try to stick with giveaways for some groups (PA, Unlucky 7), with some public giveaways, while mainly giving on the forum / during some event. I still think I have some catching-up to do, regarding these.

I don't feel requesting a new winner, because of the ratio would be good with the rules. I understand that it doesn't feel good to feed someone, that has won a couple of hundred games and has only given 10 or something. It still is what you get, when you give and actually I don't think it is us to judge about that. If you want just handpicked persons to win your giveaways, there are ways to ensure that.
I liked the idea of the Balancing Act Group, where you have to keep your ratio balanced in order to stay in the group. There also was a nice group, which folded unfortunally. The idea there was, that you give a game you liked playing, play your win in the next two month and tell the person who gifted it, how you liked it.

I see that "level" is in the lead in the poll, but that doesn't work at all. Even when creating giveaways at level 6 or 7, most of the winners will be people with many times more wins than sent. The only way is by using sgtools, specific groups, or individually selecting users for your WL.

Edit: Support will not allow you to request a new winner because of their ratio. You would actually be breaking the rules if you refuse to send the game.

Not that many, actually. Although most of my GAs are invite only they're not surprises as such, but have threads dedicated to them in the forums, or they're only dropped in the SG chat.

Surprise GAs will be coming up for Christmas though. :)

Frankly, I don't really care about ratio (unless it's really bad, like staying at level 0 or 1 while having won hundreds of games; there is a blacklist for people like that).

I didn't read all the replies, so you probably already got it ten times, but just in case: unless rules have changed, you cannot request a reroll for "personal" reasons. Reroll can be requested:

  • if the winner asks for it by leaving a comment stating so
  • if the winner has an history of rule breaking (multiple win or unactivated win), and if and only if it wasn't already taken care of by support (= a suspension has already been served)
  • if the game given away is a pack, and the winner already owns more than an half of it
  • if the winner already owns the game (which should not happen unless he owns it after entering the GA)

Steam API is a weird thing xD You can enter for DLC's that you already have and some games have more than one api (like Fallout NV). You have to hide manually dlc/s and games owned that SG doesn't recognise properly... Almost nobody do that and some people don't even know what games they have,so...

Just like Nick Said, its nice to see the winner play/try the game. Groups like Playing Appreciated ensure the winner needs to play within a month. Some SG users win games just to idle cards or other reasons.

Using your whitelist for certain giveaways is an easy way to avoid leeches without extra effort. Also, you can do invite only giveaways to reward people that like doing puzzles or participate in events.

My most direct answer to the title is- None.

I value the winner giving the game a try, because I tend to giveaway only games that I really liked and thus think more people should get a chance to play (and occasionally stuff I'm sure I would like a lot). Their ratio doesn't really matter to me since for every "positive" ratio, there needs to be a "negative" one on someone. It tells me absolutely nothing. Sure, a person with 2000 wins is less likely to play the game they won from me since it's 1 out of 2000 and they've shown the willingness to enter everything just for a +1 to their library... but that probability doesn't really change if they've made 10 giveaways themselves or 10000.

So the method I use is to limit giveaways to people I've trusted (Whitelist), groups made by people whom I trust and respect (those groups are pretty much completely dead at this point...) and groups like Playing Matter which require for the winners to play their wins. None of those methods are perfect, of course, and I realize I'm excluding lots of people who would play those games and maybe even love them and it makes me feel like shit... But I'm way too paranoid and have no faith in humanity to expect said people to be anything but a tiny minority. :/

Sorry, I think I kinda didn't answer your question at all and just talked about my own topic. I guess I'm just... disappointed at how, for the majority of the current SteamGifts community, it's all about making a number go up or down nowadays instead of actually sharing good games with others... I really have to wonder if it's always been like this and I just wasn't paying enough attention before. T.T

i do believe a whitelist is the best option. requesting a new winner based in their ratio seems a bit unfair for me. (and i am not sure if its against the rules?)

i used to be a leech but since i started getting some money with my artwork i was able to start giving back, even if its kinda cheap games -w-''

i'm pretty sure you can find ratio-based group in the group recruitment section. here are some that i found by checking a few threads:

*1:2 : gift sent - gift received ratio

as for me, i don't mind leech as long as they play their games. ratio can be "cheated" by buying cheap bundles anyway. i think i saw someone who go to level 3 or something by buying a bunch of dollar neon bundles.

Pandora and RWG are actually 1:2. 2 games received - 1 given so it's basically 0.5. And this is just wins/gifts ratio, not CV.

Come to think about it, you are right. I only glimpsed through their recruitment page and copied the ratio text.

Whitelisting is the safest possible. Why?

Yes. You don't need to tell them TO NOT SPREAD the INVITE LINK.

If you dropped your invite link somewhere and prohibited the link shares, almost impossible to prevent that OR to give them ultimatum especially, if you have hundreds participant.

By whitelisting you choose your own Users that YOU THINK DESERVES your gift. That's it. More comfortable and nicer.

Whitelists.
Tried everything else in the past, it didn't work.

Although whitelisting also has its downsides, of course. There is no perfect system.

Level is enough, since i dont like to support leechers i put at least level 6. Ofc there may be users who still won more than gave on lvl6 but at least they gave smth.
