Just a moment ago, games that are "banned" or whatever because Valve cuts tie with developers are no longer detected by Steam API. A prime example is that (almost) all Digital Homicide games are no longer detected as owned.

This is not a per-app change, but rather a system-wide change, so if you own some games made by other developers that are "banned" then Steam API will also no longer detect them. Not sure if this is intentional and why Valve would do this, but surely this will change a lot of things.

What this could mean in SG:

  • for now, if you have won some game before and the game's developer has since been banned or otherwise cut business relationship with Valve, you will show as having not activated the game
  • SGTools check will fail before this mass-whitelist of games gets added, if you have won such games
  • it can be hard to check ownership of such games won from here, either from giveaway creator or from support (Support may receive tickets saying the winner didn't activate these games, but in fact they did, it's just not showing up in the API)
  • for the long term you may be able to enter giveaways for these games and win them multiple times (and get suspended for breaking the rules, of course)

I don't have a complete list of what games are affected, since there are too many. This means if SGTools wants to update their whitelist it can be a non-trivial process.

Also, your profile's game count may have changed, depending on how many such games you have in your account.

For example, I own Barbie and Her Sisters Puppy Rescue (appid: 396390, you won't be able to see that I own this game unless I am on your friends list on Steam and you go to the Friends that Play page of this game), and if you check with Steam API you won't be able to find 396390 as my owned appid.

Guys, you can fix this mess thanks to my userscript:
SteamGifts - Better Steam Profile Autosync

Since the API doesn't return the games as owned syncing more often will not help. Steamgifts simply doesn't know if one's owning these games or not.
Unless your script does much more that I'm not aware of.

Yes, it does more than you are aware of. It uses another Steam API, which is more accurate. This was not affected. Downside to this API is that you need to be logged into steam store to use it.

Thank you, that is good to know.
So with your script one will not enter any public/group/whitelist giveaways for these games if owned. So only private giveaways are problematic.

Seems like a bunch of games disappeared from the count on Steam for me but thankfully it doesn't seem like I've won any of those affected games on here, yay. =)

It's somewhat funny, yet sad how many people claim to have "lost so many games" or how they "removed so many games from the library" when all they lost is some numbers on their front page and a few entries in a humongous list of games that can be seen by others...
It really shows what the main point of most of these games was...

79 games removed. It doesn't bother me even though I'm a collector. I'm glad that the crap games are thoroughly purged. That said, all of the games are not bad and the resulting problems to SG are unfortunate :(

In case someone needs the list:

  • Steam changes gifting system resulted in my boycotting their store and spending $0 in the Summer Sale.
  • Steam removing 71 legally purchased games from my library would mean that, except for cheap bundles sold by third parties, anything more expensive I'll buy on GOG.

Valve seems to be doing everything in their power to ensure I won't spend any money with them. So far, they're been very successful at it.

They did not remove them from your library. You can still play them.

Ok, if it's just the visibility of these games in my profile, then it's not as bad. Still stupid, annoying and inconsiderate, but overall not as bad.

No announcement, just screwing users and groups again. Well done, Valve.

I don't get it why most of you are only rambling about the games count. There's no functionality in it. The other consequences are way worse: the unactivated sh*t the support here and knsys has to take care of. The tracker of the Removed Games Collector/timekillerz group is broken. You can only see the few achievements in the preview section in the library, therefore you don't know how which achievements you can get (without checking other sites once again). Sites where you could filter already owned games might list them again, if they don't use Steam as only source (e.g. price comparisons).

"oh sweet relief" - steam has so much garbage (you don't even know you had it) you're basically feeding the counter
and if the counter drops you're e-peen's being diminished ... and thats not alright "bercause mine wuz bigger" :D

From what I read util now, they just removed the id's from the DB, they can not remove the games from your library , that will be illegal and EU wont like that !

For me it is a good thing but there are a lot of haters that spam hate on STEAMgifts :)) !

It is amazing to me the number of people complaining how much Steam suck but are on a site dedicated to gifting Steam games.

This community became something else aside the gifting and the giveaways. And steam is getting worse and worse since most of us registered here, so it won't be a surprise that if this trend continues, it will ultimately affect this site so much that may destroy it.

Will this affect achievements in any way? As in, if I own the games that are "banned," can I still earn achievements for them and have it count for my AGCR?

I dunno about new ones, but I can confirm that Base Squad 49 did NOT disappear from my completed games statistic.

EDIT: I just got two new achievements in Zi and they registered just fine toward the total.

I feel slightly mixed about this move by Valve. I personally do not care about my game count that much and I haven't had my game badge lowered either but still I'm upset with all the extras being disabled such as the achievement page which I personally consider to be part of the product I bought (even if it legally might not be). For me personally this was the final budge and from now on I'll be checking if GOG has a game I want first before deciding to get it on Steam because clearly Valve doesn't care about its customers.
