Giveaway group: KickstartGifts

This is a new giveaway group that's intended to have a rotating membership of people with the best opportunity to make use of the gifts. What do I mean? Read on and you'll get the picture.

Here are the rules:

  • To start off with the bleedingly obvious: you must have a SteamGifts profile. That means you have a minimum of $100 worth of games.
  • You may not have more than $250 worth of games. This is measured using Steam Gauge and appeals to this number are not possible.
  • If, at any point in time, the value of your account exceeds $250 (or your profile is private), you should remove yourself from the group. If you don't, I'll do it for you. This event is supposed to be a happy occasion. :-)
  • I don't participate in giveaways myself. If I enter in a group giveaway you create and I win, you can request a new winner from Steamgifts support.

That's the basics. Here are the sanity checks:

  • No sinning. VAC bans, trade bans, SteamGifts suspensions and scammer listings on SteamRep are all reasons to be removed from the group.
  • No begging. If you want to debase yourself, do it on your own time.
  • No trading. There are other venues for that, like our sister site SteamTrades.

That's it, those are the only rules. In particular, you don't have to create any giveaways, have a minimum contributor value or maintain any sort of ratio. In fact, I don't expect anyone to "do" anything within the group at all. There'll be at least one person doing giveaways, namely me. For now, my plan is to have one giveaway every two weeks, just to see how things go. It's not very exciting, I know, but it's free, so what have you got to lose?

The only way to enter the group at this moment is to post a link to http://www.mysteamgauge.com with your profile, so I can immediately check if you qualify.

Please mind the following "don'ts":

  • Don't bump your own request. you will not actually get any response until I've taken my sweet time, which could be a while.
  • Don't simply ask if you can join without a link. If you have to ask, you're doing it wrong, and I'm going to ignore you entirely.
  • Don't send friend invites to me. They will all be ignored.

Aside from join requests, ideas and general remarks are welcome. But no, the $250 figure isn't going to be raised to whatever you've got so you can join. :-)

Update. As Azzaboi pointed out, a cynical person could use this as an opportunity for getting more games for themselves while giving none to others. This is not my intent, so I added a new rule that's enforceable by Steamgifts support.

Update 2. I've noticed that "post a request" and "don't ask if you qualify" are potentially contradictory. :-) To make things slightly easier on me, from this point on (23-11 17:36 UTC), please post a link to Steam Gauge with your profile. I'm not penalizing earlier posts that didn't include this and you don't need to update.

Update of November 29th: it's alive! You can now also join the group by posting a comment on my profile. I will keep this post open for a little while longer so people can see it, but I'll close it in a bit.

No Offence, but there's one thing I really hate about higher powers creating rules, which they themselves cannot demostrate and will not keep.

If you create a rule - rule of thumb is you should also follow it to show your not corrupted or abusing your own system.

Just a warning to others - according to your own rules, the admin should leave or be kicked from your own group...???

"I know, but it's free, so what have you got to lose?"
A lot of games leeched from giveaways then kicked... while one uses and profits off all more.

"But no, the $250 figure isn't going to be raised to whatever you've got so you can join. :-)" About sums it up, however you did mention you would do most of the giveaways yourself?

You raise a good point which I completely failed to consider.

I do not intend to participate in any giveaways myself. I thought that'd be obvious since I wouldn't expect people who have less than $250 worth of games to create giveaways in the first place, but they might.

Fair enough - Just making sure for others not to be scammed or something. All the best for your group.

I personally fail all the "sanity" checks plus more so won't be asking to join myself.

I covered your objection by amending the rules. Thanks for pointing out the gap.

I plan to leave this open for a week or so to see if there are any people at all with accounts worth less than $250 who can also find this post. If there are none I might raise the limit.

It may be difficult to find a 250 account since steamgifts does not count bundle games into the 100. My wife can not join steamgifts but has over 250 according to the gauge!

Just FYI

I don't consider that to be a big problem because I'm using the account value as a rough indicator of how much gaming hours you can squeeze out of your account (not perfect by any means, of course). Bundle games are no worse than regular games in this regard -- just because you got them cheaply doesn't mean they're inferior games, or that you are in particular need of more games.

If it's really the case that nobody has less than $250, this can mean three things:

  • I should change it to absolute number of games or suchlike (but even there bundles would probably put you over the limit);
  • The Steamgifts $100-minus-bundles criterion means my group can't work in combination with Steamgifts, too bad;
  • Everybody has enough games already and my group is unnecessary to begin with -- just enter giveaways for the stuff you want.

I don't know what's what yet. :-)

It doesn't matter to me either way... I'm not interested in entering. I just wanted to remind you of steamgifts criteria for others who may be close to joining! Happy Holidays to all!

I joined Steam gauge because i thought the value of my account was less than $250, but i was wrong :(

Steam Gauge is not something you join. When you "sign in" to Steam Gauge, that's just an easier way for it to get your account ID. It simply looks at your Steam profile and tallies all the games you've got according to their value on Steam. Anyone can check the value of your account as long as your profile is public. You can switch your profile to private if you don't like that, but you will need to switch it back to public every so often to sync your account on Steamgifts.

I have just under $200 of games on my account - under the $250 max needed to join. (This might change after the Holiday sale if I get any more money into the Steam Wallet, though...)

So may I join the group?

Over the last 13 months, you've spent 731.6 hours playing this selection, which includes 52 items, is valued at $699.61, and requires 254 GB.
Thanks anyways. It's nice to see someone who wants to help those with less games. ^_^

My fears of nobody qualifying are somewhat allayed. I have 6 qualifying people so far:

  • TehGamingDj
  • TJSlipperman
  • DmTRy
  • Carolina
  • ccmm7
  • ZETscher

And this serves as a cheap bump.

OK, I've got 11 people so far, and one of you (ccmm7) has already become disqualified. I'm guessing more might become disqualified during the current Steam sales. :-)

Nevertheless, 10 people should be just about enough to make this concept viable, and on the bright side -- you have really good winning odds with a small group. The idea was always to have a fast rotating membership.

I'm going to send out friend & group invites tomorrow. Application for the group remains open.

The first giveaway will be for the Mass Effect Collection, which is Mass Effect 1 + 2. Just a heads up in case you were thinking of getting this on sales. Though you'll have no guarantees of winning it, of course. :-)

I debated on whether or not to just block you, but I'm in a good mood.

No, people who send me invites while their account is worth more than my own aren't part of my target audience, sorry. :-P
