I'm pretty new here, and new to trading in general, so I guess this is a way of teaching me a lesson! I was added by this user, randomly, and they messaged me telling me they had Rust, which is a game I'm looking for right now! I know most people on here don't like it when people add them without commenting on their thread, or whatever, but I don't mind! I guess I need to be more careful with that, huh? Anyway, they sent me a list of my games that they liked and asked me to make an offer. In the end we agreed to three of my games for Rust (since my games weren't worth much, I was happy with this) I, stupidly, agreed to go first and sent the Keys to them. They didn't reply for a minute or two, so I asked "did the keys work okay?" and as soon as I did - BAM! - they were offline, and not on my friend list anymore. I lost three games (Grimind, Humanity Asset and The Bluecoats: North vs South) which could have been used to get something in return, and I feel so silly, but in a way this is good, because I now know how careful I need to be!!

EDIT: one very lovely user, http://www.steamgifts.com/user/Sq1rr3l, added me and sent me a key for Rust ahh I am so so grateful, you have no idea!!!!

Squirrel for president ! :)

also, just about everyone whos into trading (or plans to) should install Enhanced steam addon. Plus if you are new, it really pays to be extra careful with deals that look too good to be true and well thats about it :P

To scam 30 cents worth games, one must be really a poor person.

I traded around 3-400 games of my account without problems, never got scammed.
Just remember to check the reputation of the person first, and in case something seems fishy to you ask him to go first or abandon the trade. 90% you will find the game from someone else even cheaper ;)
Add me if you wish to trade, I won't scam you promise ahahah :D

  • Joker profile avatar
  • Fatality in the username
  • When someone says "I won't scam you promise" and even adds that evil sounding "ahahah :D" at the end, that's usually exactly when they want to scam you
  • Last but not least, your Trade Feedback is +108 BUT also -1 so you already have some shameless behavior in the past which is another warning sign.

Yes yes, joker avatar means I'm a scammer, Italian nationality means I'm with mafia and fatality means I'm also a serai killer!

Anyway Mr. Grumpcat here got the point, always check the feedback. If it's negative better read the reasons, since I have a -rep I could be a scammer (or victim of revenge bad feedback)

its not a big loss, when i started i was scammed for $100 worth games including rust gift, didnt gave up and now made quite a rep trading my spare keys, dont have to go first in 90% of the trades now.

If you want you can follow these simple rules

  1. Install Enhanced Steam Addon (This is must because it adds steamgift & steam rep links to the profiles of people adding you.
  2. Enable "Display Steam URL address bar when available" in steam client Settings >> Interface
  3. Always take a look at the rep of person trading, even read negative comments (some times even scammers post negative comments on reputable traders).
  4. Never add a steam profile that looks shady e.g low level with small number of games. & if you are trading on steamgifts, enhanced steam will take them to his/her profile other wise it will return to main page.
  5. Make sure your first trades should be with reputable traders with lot of rep and ask them to +rep your profile as well, it will help you build up your rep and help you in future trades.

Hope this helps you and make you experience on sg more friendly, cheers!

Well, at least you took it as a "lesson learned" and now have plenty of defense against it happening in the future. It sucks getting scammed, I'm sure, but you handled it very nicely and it looks like it all worked out in the end thanks to a generous furry mammalian creature.

If you're going to be trading a lot in the future (I don't because it's too much of a bother for me), definitely take the advice given by the others here -- enhanced steam and steamreap, amongst other things -- there are plenty of tools out there to help and some of these guys have years of trading experience. The best defense, however, is common sense, and you seem to be okay in that regard. :)

Sorry to hear, but at least it sounds like you only lost 3 bundle keys, I can't even believe some people would sink so low to ruin their reputation over literally less than a dollar... and you got Rust in the end so huge profit for you, congratulations!
In the future be mindful of trades that are clearly too good to be true.. again, you were trading 3 bundle keys with a combined value of less than a dollar for a game that's been at least €10 during the highest sales.. that alone should ring alarm bells :)

remind me my first trade ever...it was on indiegala when i just discovered the world of web gifting, bundles, etc.. traded 3 of my cheap game for cs:go, i gave my games first, then he gave me his key, i tried, it said that the key for cs:go was already use, and when i tried to say to him (didn't took more than 20 sec to test and respond) BAM offline and not in my friend list anymore !

since then i checked each and every profile i traded with. Some of those people were very friendly and everything goes smoothly so, good thing there isn't only assholes in this world^^

Aw that sucks. At least they were just 3 bundled games and not a really expensive game. I know somebody who lost FIFA 2016. Also keep in mind that not every random that adds you is a scammer (though you should proceed with extreme caution). I once managed to trade 6 freebies for 40~ low value cards (I don't remember the exact amount of cards).

Last but not the least, be very careful with impersonators. They will tell you that they have over 100 positive rep and link you to the Steamgifts profile of somebody else. Take your time to check if you're actually trading with said person and not with an imposter.

If something's too good, maybe it's fake, no way you can make a trade like that with a strange, 3 cheap games (bad reviews and Humanity Asset was free before) for Rust? no way.
So sorry for your loss, lession learned :)

I'll be more careful next time." And here I am. :V
