Hi SG, you might have noticed e-mail notifications are now live. I'll explain how they work, because you'll likely have a few questions.

To start, there's a new Notifications section available on the account page. You'll be able to enable or disable any type of e-mail we send using that page. As well, every e-mail that's sent out will have an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and this functions similar to the Notifications page, where you can manage your e-mail settings.

At the moment there are three types of e-mails being sent.

  1. When you register on the site, you'll receive a welcome e-mail which thanks you for signing up. At the same time, the e-mail recommends a few of the top giveaways that are available for you to join.

  2. When your giveaways end, you'll receive an e-mail mentioning they have ended, which acts as a general reminder. However, it's common for users to run multiple giveaways ending at once, or ending at a similar time, so the e-mail system is configured to group these giveaways into a single e-mail. Right now, when a giveaway ends, the site will check if you have other giveaways ending in the next 20 minutes, and if so, it will wait for those giveaways to finish before sending an e-mail. For example, if you have 500 giveaways ending within the next 16 minutes, then you'll receive one e-mail in 16 minutes mentioning 500 of your giveaways have ended, and the e-mail body will list the first 10, followed by, "... and 490 more".

  3. When you win a game (excluding rerolls for the time being), you'll receive an e-mail. This should help to reduce the chance of a user going missing after they win a gift. Similar to the above, these e-mails are grouped when there's a high chance you're going to win another game in the next 20 minutes. For example, if you win a game, and there's a low probability you're going to win another game soon, then you'll instantly receive an e-mail. If you win a game, and you're entered into a giveaway that's ending in 13 minutes, where you have a 50% chance of winning, then the site will wait for that giveaway to end, and if you win, then you'll receive a single e-mail mentioning you won 2 new games. Keys for games are never listed in e-mails, the messages simply list the name of the game you won, with a link to SteamGifts.

Notes

  • E-mails are queued in the database, and sent at a rate of 1,500 per minute. This means if a developer giveaway for 15,000 copies comes to an end, there could be up to a 10 minute delay for these to be processed. These type of giveaways are set to lower priority, so they do not delay other e-mails being sent.

  • The status of every e-mail is logged in the database. If your e-mail address permanently bounces, then your e-mail address is excluded from receiving e-mails. If your e-mail address temporarily bounces (for example, if your inbox is full, or if you configured an "out of office" or vacation autoresponder), the site will wait 5 days before attempting to send you e-mail again.

  • If you change your e-mail notification settings, there might be a delay of up to 20 minutes for the change to take place.

  • All e-mails include both HTML and plain text versions.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Receive an e-mail when the key/link is made available by the GA creator.

A BIG

+1

to that, how it actually should be.
This being one of the most desired features, for the site to signal the key being ready (or gift being (pressed) sent).

Some ppl click "Send button" just to remove "red notification". And they send all keys/gifts once in a week.
So winner will see e-mail "key/gift being ready" but its not 😌

Just a heads up, at least in the "won GA" e-mail, the address at the bottom is hyperlinked only on the "A" of Canada, and brought me to Google, with a search of the aforementioned address.

The code has no link in the address, so I'm assuming your e-mail client is adding the strange link.

It's not my browser, as I tried two others as well, so you must be right. My e-mail client is a bit wonky from time to time.

Thank you for this feature, and making it optional.
Does the "welcome to SG" email mention and link to the FAQ and Guidelines, by any chance?
And maybe explicitly say that games won must be activated by the correct account?

I hate the You Won A Gift email. It spoils the fun of checking the site for space kitty. That is one I will definitely want disabled.

I like the reminder that my giveaways have ended. That will be very helpful!

It's an interesting addition... Actually won something while I was away so it was nice to see a notification on my phone pop up, so I could check it asap. My only complaint would be that I don't like seeing the game in the email subject and the surprise being "spoiled", but it's no problem.

Not really sure for whom this feature is ment for because normal users have to log onto the site regularly anyway to enter GAs but maybe it will help make bot users accept their wins faster instead of checking SG for wins once a week on the weekends.

This should help to reduce the chance of a user going missing after they win a gift.

i'd say it was for these people since they're mentioned in the op, and not bots like everyone is assuming.

But is it really such a big issue ? I've never encountered that situation in 511 gibs sent.
The only times I had to reroll because of the winner not responding to my attempts to contact them were users that are online on SG 24/7.

this wasn't a feature to solve any form of "issue", it was just a convenience feature that can even be disabled.

it has the side bonus of being useful for the brand new people who came here for only 1-2days and entered stuff and then forgot all about the website but then they happen to of gotten lucky with a win and the email causes them to return to the website once again. but it wasn't really a solution, it was just a bonus. xD

Fair enough. I was wondering if this new feature doesn't encourage the use of bots but I guess it's too early to draw any legitimate conclusions.

well yeah, it has that unfortunate side bonus too :S i can't deny that. but it wasn't added to encourage or discourage users from that really, it just happens to be a side effect also.

Nice new feature. I like it.

Little curious as to why you chose to use fastmail.com for sending the e-mail, judging from the domain's spf-records, but to each their own :)

All of these e-mail notifications are running through Amazon SES. FastMail is in the records simply because it's my e-mail host of choice for all my personal and business e-mail. These automated e-mails have no connection with FastMail though.

I've been into plenty of forums/discussion board where they send notification email every time someone replies to me. I'm glad this isn't one of these.

About time! I hope this will cut down on non-responsive winners and possibly gifters too, in the event they are off the website and don't know.
keep the improvements coming!

"Right now, when a giveaway ends, the site will check if you have other giveaways ending in the next 20 minutes, and if so, it will wait for those giveaways to finish before sending an e-mail." Does this 20 minute timer reset for every GA, or is it just for the first one. For example, I have 3 giveaways running, one will end at 2:00, one will end at 2:20, and one will end at 2:40. What time will I get the email?
