Hello, just wondering what fellow SG'ers like to play?

I feel lucky that, since joining SG, I've been able to win a few games in several different genres that I would have never tried out (or even heard of ) otherwise.

So, here's a fun poll for you all! (Or you can just leave a comment with what Genre you choose, and even qualify it, e.g.:

Story-Rich
Exploration
Sandbox
Fantasy
Sci-Fi
Gothic
)

What is your most favorite game genre? (I.e. if you had to spend limited cash on a bag full of games, that's what you would choose over any other genre!)

Awesome! Can I ask what's a grand strategy game highly recommended for people who've never tried one before? (preferably fantasy world =)

I don't think that there is even "real" grand strategy game set in the fantasy world. Well unless you consider space fantasy, then Stellaris would be a good fit, as it is also the easiest Paradox game to get into.

Open World Adventure for me. Especially where you can use a lot of freedom to do whatever you want.

I like those too! I consider Oblivion to be my fondest Open World Adventure (with RPG elements thrown in) -- I think I've sunk over a thousand hours into Oblivion after I purchased the physical GOTY! It would be nice to know of other worlds too!

Out of my curiosity, what's to like on HOG games?

I find it very relaxing. Just something you do when you don't feel like having to deal with any adversity and stuff.

Thanks for the explanation. That's the reason why I loved games like Journey, Kingdom: new lands, A.E.R. and Norwood Suite.

RPGs mainly, although I love almost all kind of games! :)
I love HOGs/point and click games, action/adventure games, strategy/war games and indie games of any kind, and platformers too! Puzzle/logic games are one of my favourite genre, but RPGs have been my personal favourite since I was a teenager in the '90s :)
I enjoyed MMORPGs a lot (ultima online, world of warcraft etc.) but it's been more than 10-12 years that I don't play them.. and I don't like that much FPS games or shooters and sport games (although some of them are nice ^^)
I like visual novels a lot too <3
From all these thoughs I'm torn between RPGs and strategy/tactics :P (I LOVE everything that's turn-based!!)

well going off poll it would be visual novels. over half my games are visual novels alone, i do have a whole lot of hogs too, i ended up winning 1 on this site to try and it quickly got me interested in playing more. another one i guess would have to be jrpgs. my favourite game is a final fantasy game and mixing that with anime style made it even better.

so overall id go for visual novels from poll but gameplay wise (J)rpgs

Rhythm games -- I think that's a new genre I have never heard of! <excited> Any one is particularly favorite? (Okay, that turned out wrong, how to say it? A Favorite game in that genre, in your experience?)

I listed a few in my head then looked at the poll and found none of the genres I've thought about. I feel offended ;P

Platformer, Puzzle, Point&Click, Metroidvania, Indie
(I know it's controversial and depends on definition, but Indie is absolutely a genre for me)

I have a somewhat eclectic taste in what concerns videogames and I play most genres, apart from Visual Novels and Multiplayer only.

In any case, my favorite genres are:

  • Metroidvania
  • cRPGs
  • Rogue-like
  • Strategy

RPGs, but despite every second game getting the label—since apparently if you have experience points, you are "roleplaying" now—, an actual RPG release is incredibly rare in the past years.
Second is plot-centric adventures, but ones that still retain gameplay (I could never get into VNs).
RTS used to be high up there, but no time for them now, sadly, had to choose between them and cRPGs and the latter won.

I'm in agreement with your first sentiment. :)

I wish everyone had more time to play the games they love!

I play à lot of games of many different types. My favourite are :

  • Survival Horrors like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space.
  • FPS with good solo mode like FEAR, Half Life, Doom.

I'm too scared to play these! Even the FPS you listed have lots of horror elements. :O How do people play these without freaking out?

I like stealth games the most, followed by story-rich RPGs with choices and consequences, followed by HOGs 👍

Toss up between third person action adventure games (Batman Arkham, Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc) and first person simulation/shooter games like Deus Ex and Prey (2017).
