Do people actually realize they are buying a damn background for Steam that will disappear in a month for over $479?
Or buying CS:GO for $26 for example?

Personally, I feel stupid for spending 6k gems on 6 booster packs.. Could have sold them and bought booster packs, didn't expect gems to cost that much.

Does the background itself disappear in a month? I thought that they would just not be obtainable after the sale

"This item is good for a limited time and will expire Jan 16th, 2015."
I think they updated this, but even earlier it was pretty clear that the background itself disappears.

you also get a badge with the profile so that might be what they mostly want

I really don't get how can a virtual logo (badge) drive people so mad...

People literally throw money away so honestly the fact that they are getting something no matter how meaningless or insignificant it may be is already a step up.

About the background (It's actually a profile modifier), yes they do.

They give a 5000XP badge with it, which most level hunters want

if they wanted 5.000 k exp they would simply buy badges , the truth is they are SWAGGERs and want to increase e-penis

Only that getting the item gives you 5000 XP instantly than crafting 50 badges, besides it's a limited badge which can't be obtainable anymore after the event is over.

5k exp is not worth nearly $500.
Every day there is at least 1 new badge added to Steam so you won't get to the end.

Again, it's a limited item.

Same with those who spent hundreds of dollars on the unlimited event badges, with badges as high as level 2000 when it was cheaper to buy normal sets for normal badges.

Because you can't get these anymore.

I am all for the exp, heck, I am level 46 after crafting 65 badges that have been waiting for the sale. I just say that these prices are way too high for what ever reason it is.
Not to mention that crafting during the sale gives you the sale cards that give you even more exp.

Some people quickly becomes unaware of the actual amount they're spending when there's no $ beside the currency they're using. That's why many freemium games uses coins or gems. They don't feel like they're spending money when they're using a virtual currency.

The only auction I bet on gave me the equivalent of a 90% off sale so it was worth it for me. Too many people however will go overboard and that's exactly what Valve is counting on.

That 90% is very tight in many cases if you consider current market price for gems and possible bundled games... Most of stuff I just pass over because that...

It was a game on my wishlist, I "paid" the same as I would have on a good sale and I've got a badge as a bonus. But yeah, it's very easy to lose out in the end.

As far as CS:GO and overbidding on games is concerned, I think they'll be a few different types of people, and probably more than what I'm listing here:

  • People who don't realise and got carried away
  • People who realise, but don't really care as they see fun and entertainment in the auction process itself, afterall we're not talking huge amounts of cash in the great scheme of things as far as some folk are concerned
  • People who did really well out of cheap gems for boosters, they might consider that they're almost playing for free. I know in reality they'd be spending money they got from selling the boosters which they could've spent in the sale, or alternatively were trashing backgrounds and emotes for gems out of the badges they crafted with said boosters but they did have a nice little windfall. In theory, if I'd have made all my games with cards drop I could have acquired getting on for 700 boosters on day one when sacks were $0.03. I could see myself potentially falling into this category if I'd have got all those boosters and just had some fun with it.
  • People who don't really care for backgrounds and emotes, other than the background they have on display yet have lots and lots of them to trash. They might not consider it worth their time to list them all on the market, and view this as a good way of getting rid of them, exchanging them for something more tangible to them. Again, to them it's almost a form of 'free' currency.

As far as the the background goes. It's about the e-peen. I just hope that everyone grabbing it can afford it and they're not addicted for their sake.

Steam brainwashes people into negligence their wallet

Also people are dumb, i think mainly is that, with this auction i've made more 10$ profit, while leveling up, my bids are the smallest i can keep them while still staying in game, ranging between 10 - 25 gems

And thats it

Wont make a new thread, i have a question too. Does anybody knows how the conversion rate (how much gems one item is worth) is generated? And is there any list where i can see which background, items give how many gems ?

There is no conversion rate.
The only rate I have noticed: Valve game's emoticons and backgrounds = 100 gems. (Reason: 100% of the tax goes to Valve = higher price is better)

Just go to your inventory and look at the items there, it'll show you. Some backgrounds and emoticons are worth 100 gems and sell for ~$0.11.
