Another brand new user... registered less then an hour ago. Giving away 126 copies of COD Black Ops, 2 copies of Brink, COD MW2, and Terraria.

Pretty obviously just trying to generate points for himself. I highly doubt he's planning on buy 100+ copies of Black Ops. Especially when his Steam acct has all of two games, doesn't seem like he has tons of expendable income. And with a VAC ban he's not exactly shown himself to be trustworthy in the past.

Maybe CG can tweak the verifying tech in the first time sign-in page so that it can detect VAC-Bans to prevent cheats from signing up.

That, or increase the required steam library value to something not easily avoided.

A combination of those measures plus others more seems better for me. We have to set some basic limits.

Actually I think it'd be better if it checked hours of games played. Cause then you'd need to run a game for hours to set up a bum account.

I own $1800 worth of games. If people who are VAC banned cant join then I would be forced out too. Thats a pretty dumb idea.

While I do agree that VAC bans in general should mean no entry to this site I must admit that I also have VAC bans on my account although I have never cheated. Luckily Cult still was kind enough to invite me here.

I was stupid enough to give my account away for a forum user for a while once I only had some old Counter Strike pack in my account. The guy was supposed to play for a while and give the account back. Once I took the account back and changed the password I had bans in:

winui
Counter-Strike
Team Fortress Classic
Day of Defeat
Deathmatch Classic
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Ricochet
Half-Life
Codename Gordon
Ricochet
Half-Life
Codename Gordon
Half-Life: Blue Shift

I don't mind the bans but it does make my account look bad. Needless to say I learnt my leasson... I think I should have abandoned my account and created new but unfortunately didn't and now it's too late for that.

I guess the VAC Ban=No Entry might be a bit extreme no that I look at it from your story.

But there has to be some sort of quality control to the site. Maybe a strike system, like if someone made an empty giveaway on purpose/3-5 empty giveaways on accident they should have their entry permission taken away for an determined amount of time.

Maybe VAC ban = flag to have user checked by mod/admin?

Maybe it would be good that you'd be only able to create one giveaway and only once the gift is received for that giveaway you could create as many more as you want. That would be quite efficient way of avoid giveaway flooding right?

Oh yeah, that's a better idea.

Although I know tons of Goons and others who join this site fully expecting to start several different giveaways. If such a feature were added I would demand it be Clearly spelled out when you setup a giveaway as well as clearly spelled out in the FAQ. That way they can know that if they want to start multiple giveaways straight out they need to start one for only an hour and then start the rest after that one is taken care of.

People have gotten VAC banned who didn't actually hack. I Don't think they should be forbidden from entry to the site for having a VAC ban.

I would be against prevention of people with VAC Bans from signing up, because it is no way relates to their likelihood to post fake giveaways or enter giveaways they shouldn't. I've received bans in games long past for exploiting things, even once resulted in tripling the amount of gold in an MMO overnight (Most of which didn't get deleted). If Steam were able to keep track of such things it would appear on my account and would that be reason to not let me join? Because I did something stupid when I was younger?

Yeah, the registering system needs to be tweaked, so this doesn't happen again. It's kind of sneaky that he keeps generating points for himself to make new accounts that he can continue trolling on, but hopefully cg and cult can lock him out completely.

How to get tons of points in a few minutes:

  • Step 1. Invite someone who doesn't care about giveaways or this site.
  • Step 2. Let him/she to submit lots of expensive and valuable giveaways.
  • Step 3. ???
  • Step 4. PROFIT.

Yes, and anyone with multiple accounts can do this. The person who invited the fake gifter should be investigated in each case.

For one, the problem with wishlist is that it doesn't automatically remove games that one buys. Happened to me countless times, that I just happen to take a look at my wishlist, and see that I have already bought few games, but forgotten to remove them from the list.

it does for me (remove games that is).

This could easily be avoided if points weren't given out until the gift was set to received.

1 decade ago

Lame users could accidentally drain the point economy by never marking anything as received. There are 179 people who have yet to mark their winnings as received.

These people are just plain stupid. They dont even stop to think for one second if they will get banned or not.

1 decade ago

i think there is solution to the problem, don't allow gift games You don't own

also add ranking system for the gifts, e.g. 3, 7, 11 etc. successful giveaways to mark veterans

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's definitely not a good solution imo, there are lots of legitimate users that have given away games they don't personally own.
One could easily see lots of people want a game and give it away without owning it or even be interested in that game personally.

Now if one owns it and has it on their wishlist and is giving it away, that's more obviously unusual.

Perhaps limit giveaways you can start until you've had a few confirmed arrivals? 1 at a time until feedback has arrived or something of a similar nature to make sure you're not some 10 year old/scammer/weirdo that doesn't understand the way the site works.
