Opened discussions (when their page is opened) should have some info about the date of the last post, somewhere at the top (after the title, before the Open/Closed button for eg.).

Like it is now at the global Discussions page, the column at the right: Last Post showing each discussions last post date.
We can find that info there, so it wouldn't be hard to put that into the unique discussions pages as well.

So if you know you read through that discussion X days ago, and opening it again from your bookmarks, you could easily see if there are new posts since that time or not.

This is a good suggestion, I'd like to see this info added!
I don't really care, this is not important for me.
I'm not reading discussions at all, never did and never will.

It shows lol in the right of the screen there

Where?

He refers to "Messages" button. The problem is it shows only new responses to your posts. That's why I think we need "Subscribe" button in the discussions to extend the functionality of "Messages" button instead of monitoring each discussion ourselves. It's stupid to do something computer can do better.

BTW, your poll missing "I have a better idea" option. ;)

Well, there is nothing in my Messages page (thanks God) when I am checking a thread I never wrote in. O.o
What I suggested is totally unrelated from the Messages notification system.

Better idea option? There can't be better, just OTHER ideas I'm afraid. Again: all what I'd like to see is the last post of the thread info in the threads.

EDIT:
Or it can be after the "X Comments" (since this is related to the comments), in that line there is also more free space.

Why I originally thought it should be right after the title: if the original post is too long it would save some time for the users, as down-scrolling to the start of the comments would not be necessary.

Um... I think you don't understand my suggestion.

You want to see last update date in the discussions, but there are two problems with this:

  1. You have to check each discussion manually. It's fine when there are 1 or 2 but turns into the nightmare when there are 10+ and absolutely pointless wasting of your time if there were no new messages.
  2. You have to remember when you visited it last time and you have to check a date of each post in the discussion to make sure you didn't miss anything new besides that one new post.

I'm talking about implementing "Subscribe" button in the discussions. If you want to monitor changes in the specific discussion you press it and you will see in messages something like:

Discussion: "Title of a discussion" Last visit: date
New messages since last visit: number of messages
Link to the first message since last visit.

Also, it would be nice to have ability to jump between new messages. In such case, you won't need to search for them yourself in case of a huge discussion.

So, instead of a date of the last post you really want to know a date of your last visit and button to jump between new comments since your last visit. Am I right? There is no point to waste your time on manually checking each discussion if that could be automated.

What you say is much deeper and greater suggestions, I totally agree those would be great and much easier to track the changes since your last visit.

But I still say, the 1st step should be to implement the suggestion what this thread says in the OP.
This wouldn't take much time to do, as that data already exists and showing in other pages (at the global discussions page and the "Active discussions" part at the bottom of the Giveaway listings).
Your suggestions need some new coding what can take long time.

Your suggestions and mine could go together, it is not either this or that. Sorry if I was not clear the 1st time. Hope all of these we will see in the near future. :)

Well, that could be helpful but I think in such case the easiest way would be to add invisible block with ID="latest" into last post in the discussion. You would be able to bookmark a link like http://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/78GHi/#latest and go directly to the last post instead of clicking on that link in the header. In such case, it will be enough to put a link "Last post" in the header without necessity to display there any other information.

I think we need a button to subscribe to any changes in the discussion instead of suggested solution. Right now, we receive an update when someone responds to our post and there is no way to monitor whole thread. So, if subscribed then there should appear information about number of a new posts since last visit.
