Based on its description, it is more of a "follow the herd" kind of browsing helper then?

Well, if you have time to check every single game that is on sale, then better do that. But if you don't have time like that on your hand, what is the problem checking games based on their popularity?

That popularity does not equal quality. To use the two most obvious examples, both No Man's Sky and Mafia 3 were among the most popular games before and around launch, and we know how they actually turned out to be.

Exactly where do I say popularity means quality? Did I somewhere say it filters out the best quality games?

If it is so hard to understand, going thru 16000+ games to find the games you like is not something people usually have the time for? This tool is meant to reduce the bloating by filtering out the less popular games. Or do you have a better way to reduce the bloat?

Also I don't know if you realized that, but you can see the game's rating pretty well in the search result, and even my tool provides the option to filter out any games below certain rating.

Also how the hell do you confuse between popularity and hype? Completely two different things if you didn't realize.

But if you are meaning to filter only for popularity, then your goal is to do exactly what large publishers want by coralling users to games that had a large marketing budget, hence they are known, instead of letting them explore according their own tastes.
If you really want to help them, at least factor in things like user scores. it is not exactly the best measurement on the planet, but at least it offers something more beyond the "hey, this game is popular, you should play what the other kids do" undertone.

I understand that your goal is to filter out all the Greenlight shovelware junk, but popularity is not the best method to do that. Heck, I would suggest that maybe you can start going that way by letting the user give a minimum amount for US base price as most of those games stay in the $1-3 territory for quick cash grabs. And a fine-tuned base price filter is something Steam (and most other stores) sorely miss. It is even a bit shaky at ITAD.

Explore? Are you actually suggesting that people should explore 16000+ games? If someone can, then they are welcome to do so, this extension isn't forced on anyone, it is option for people who don't have the time to explore 16000+ games. Also what does it matter what publishers want? Should people sacrifice their convenience just to rebel against publishers? Use score? I just told you that my extension has the option to filter out any games below any score you specify. And whatever you might say, there is still a strong correlation between popular games and quality, not an absolute, but the best indicator there is. Even userscore isn't a s good, because in a game that only very few played, the score can be very biased because the game had only a very limited exposure between people who like it, and taht not even mentioning all those games that use fake score. So not even that popularity gives a good indication about quality, it also legitimizes the userscore itself.

Do you realize what a horrible advice it is? There are tons of great games in the $1-3 territory, and there are still ton of shovelware beyond that price range, and not only greenlight ones, there are ton of publisher shovelware.

Well most games i like aren't the most popular. Some saddly aren't even popular (but should- like Serpent in the Staglands for example).

But it can be helpful and i will use it.
I will just turn it on and off all the time.

On chrome it can be very easy:

1) Install CONTEXT chrome extension
Context for Chrome

It allows to create a variety of collections of extensions to easily turn on and off as you need. You can turn 3 groups on at the same time then in a click turn all off but one, turn off all... its a life saver.

2) Create a context called 'Steam by popularity' or any easy to remember name.
Within it puts only the 'Steam Popularity Filter' op mentioned

3) Click on Context then on the plus button of 'Steam by popularity' to turn it on and on the minus button to turn it off

4) ???

5) Profit!
