Somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000 new species are identified each year, with about half of those being insects.

Holy Creamola. I know a lot of weird animals, but I've never seen this necky baby before. Good show! It's an antelope and a giraffe combined.

This is why I love my country. :P
(just kidding. it's ONE of the reasons why I love my country. ;)

Hm, I am suspicious. It lives in Australia. Meaning it is hiding some razor-sharp claws, it has fire-breath, or it can ninja-tackle you to death. But it is mandatory for all Aussie animals to be able to kill at least a dozen healthy young adult humans without breaking a sweat.

Oooh neat. Never seen that one before, kind of vulturey looking.

I've seen some of these before, but not all. Great selection of cute and creepy!

Potoos also sound great. To quote Tumblr user Nataliesama, they sound like an 18 year-old boy complaining to his mother because she cut off the WiFi.

I love it. I'll take twenty (in all seriousness I am one of those people who would never have a wild animal as a pet and believes heavily in conservation and not the wild pet trade.)

These big boys hit faster than an incoming bullet and because of that the space around the punch get insanely hot (8500 Fahrenheit hot) so they are pretty badass and pretty.

Poor Pangolin, such a sweet, unique boy, but isn't he one of the most trafficked in the world? :(

Indeed! Even for humans there are downsides. Still, because he's so cute, lots of people want to protect him, so hopefully he'll be ok!

Most species are vulnerable or endangered, so I'm not so optimistic.

Platypus is like a great beginner's introduction to weird animals, because every corner you turn there's just more weird stuff about them to see. I think they're one of the few mammals who lay eggs.

All of the gold that exists in the world, perhaps all that has ever been mined in human history, if melted, would fit in about three Olympic-sized swimming pools

I always wondered if this factoid was correct. To me, that doesn't seem that much gold, considering how humans tend to overdo things but it's still a crazy fact!

I don't really like animals (nor do I like to see them mistreated), or maybe animals don't like me (for example, dogs bark at me for no reason), so I'll post something inanimate I can find in my garden or in the woods behind my town. Nothing weird or exceptional, really, just good and beautiful stuff I usually go and pick up (with their name in my language).

Plants and fungi are still very interesting! I haven't seen a lot of these before, my plant knowledge is so small, so I enjoyed these :)

Hey,
I thought it'd be a fun idea for a thread if we all post an image and/or factoid about the weird and wonderful world we live in. For example, one of my favourite 'strange' looking creatures, is the Tibetan Fox. I love the mix of majesty and sheer 'doneness' on his face.
Hit me up with a random weird fact about the planet or anything within or some weird animals (No spiders or insects please, I mean if you really must, but I have a massive phobia.)
