That might be applicable only for Steamwork games (like Civ V, Modern Warfare 2 etc). Otherwise, it's safe even that rumor is true.

You can't just rename a game, renaming its label doesn't do much. You have to modify launcher/ game files to "change its name"

This seems like a roundabout way of asking if its possible to get banned for playing pirated games.
But since you just wanna be sure, lets make this clear. Steam will not (make that NEVER) ban you for playing a non Steam game. To my best knowledge it can't scan your computer as that would be against most if not every privacy laws in many countries.
What it can ban you for, is if you have a steam exclusive game such as Skyrim etc running as a non steam game (which would clearly mean that your game is pirated and well, you are an idiot to even get it associated to your steam account).

It's a complete sack of feces (not sure if I can swear).
Steam allows you to add Non-Steam Games for a reason.

Pretty much what the title asks.
I've heard a rumor that "some" users have been banned (from Steam) for playing them.
quote: "Every time you start a non-steam game, it's name is read by Steam and if it is one from theyr database (Steamworks), you get a <flag>. When you reach a certain amount of <flags> you get banned.
Now, the thing is i don't believe this bulls**ts at all, but you know, just wanna be sure :)
