Hi there,

I know by this point that there's very few people that play the games they win here, yet they do partake in giveaways. What's your intentions overall after winning the games and what do you look for in games? Do you selectively pick the giveaways that you want to play or you partake in anything you think you can win? What do you do with the won giveaway?

I personal play and plan to play them all. I am also more selective with the games I wish to win, so I don't jump for every game that is given on Steamgifts. A rule for me is games worth 10P+ are a good indication for me to check the games and kinda guide me into direction if I want to win something and partake in the giveaway.

I hope you have a great day! 😄

Lol I think it's worth bragging. It's nice to see people actually playing their wins.

Well, 18 people are being honest in the poll, that's a surprise :P
I don't farm for cards (honestly, I don't even look at the cards I get actually playing) and I only collect two things: cookbooks and dust.
I have waaay too many games in my library I got because they were free and won't really get to play but I'm not the only one using my Steam library so maybe they'll get played anyway.

I do plan on reducing the size of my library to get rid of some games after I try playing them or after I already played them. Not SG wins ofc although there are some I won when I was new I am kinda embarrassed I entered for because they could have gone to someone who would have enjoyed them.

Wait, how do you reduce the size of your library?

I've been putting games I played and have no intention to replay in a folder, with freebies I got just because they were free and tried and have no intention to play more.
I asked my gf to take a look and see if there's anything she wants to play. If not they are going kaboom.
Exclusing SG wins ofc.

I honestly wish I could gift them away instead of deleting them. All my books go to a second hand store of the American Library here. It would be cool to be able to do the same with games. One man's trash...

So, what you're trying to say is that you're uninstalling them or what do you mean by removing them from your folder because obviously on steam there can be in your library but obviously you cannot get rid of them or can you?

You can delete any game from your Steam account. You just have to go to the support page and click "I want to permanently remove this game from my account"
Obviously if you do that with a game you won on SG your SG account will get suspended/banned

Oh! I've been 11 years on Steam and never knew I can do that. Nevertheless, that's an interesting alternative to be able to clear your game list. Although I've spent the money and want to own the games even after I've played it so all my work is there.

Oh I don't intend on trashing every game.
There are certainly some I will play again and even among those I probably won't play, there are a lot I want to keep.
But I also have a loooot of freebies I got just cause they were free, and lootboy shovelware, others that never really got out of EA, some I activated from bundles before I knew SG existed that I would have given away because meh, etc.

I never met anyone doing this, but I see you don't like collecting them after finish them. Do reviews and playtime still show on your profile?

It's really just a lot of games in one place and I tend to lose track of what to play next.
I guess my anxiety issues don't help on that. Too much choice tend to send me into a spin.
I keep a record of my gameplay and replay value in a spreadsheet.

I don't review many games on Steam. I usually just feel redundant except when I really like a game and it has poor reviews or not a lot of reviews. I don't think I have reviewed any games I have deleted. I can do it just to check with the next one I delete

I see, that's very interesting never the less. I see your point. It's better to have a clear library, yet keep the games you know you'll return. You also don't mind not having to show how much effort you put in the games.

Repetition maybe? Something that feels the same is harder to enjoy the same unless there's changes to it somewhat. A multiplayer game is a lot more fun though.

Only played Factorio the Demo and got hooked for minutes trying to figure out the game. Although I do like Satisfactory a lot, I will probably stick with it for a while until I'll buy Factorio. I didn't play RimWorld and frankly, I know little about the game. Never heard of Hypnospace Outlaw, but now I do. I wishlisted it, because I wanna experience nostalgia.

Very likely it was repetition, i do remember feeling magicka2 feeling more like a chore than a game to play.

im very glad i got another person to like factorio >w< it is truly a very hooking game <3
we finished hypnospace like 2 days ago, and to be honest it feels sad that it's over, but thankfully there is the second game coming out soon hopefully!
for rimworld, imagine a game of colony management almost as complex as dwarf fortress, but with non ascii graphics

i think i am very into games that are of resource management and maybe rts, i do enjoy some low energy games with simple actions for when i am too sleepy too

i just spied your profile, i see you like xcom2 a lot! i honestly have my seasons where i am heavily into tactics game (likely because some hit of nostalgia from fallout2) but to be honest i can never play xcom2.. the counter on the top is just sooo stressing DX'

worst is i heard is game over when it reaches zero, but i did love the character creation, i like to sit down with my brother and make the whole family sometimes.. only to see us die in a dumb way XD

i really liked xcom but i always lost too, i just wish there was a way to remove the stress counter on top of xcom2 so maybe i can actually borrow it from the bf's library and play it for real!
but it's the same with warhammer 40k mechanicus, a game i really enjoy but i just cannot deal with a constant timer put on me, i rather take my time and grind my soldiers to max before taking on the actual missions... i think that's also why i could never play majora's mask (maybe that damned moon falling towards you acompanied with the choppy emulation when i was younger is what rooted the incredible stress of games that have any kind of timer in them XD )

You got me, that's very true! I did play it a lot before when I didn't have it on Steam, and would have had more time spent on the game, this is my 3rd playthrough on Steam. I've not unlocked all the achievements on the game, although I should go for it at some point. I just took a break from it.

i honestly have my seasons where i am heavily into tactics game (likely because some hit of nostalgia from fallout2) but to be honest i can never play xcom2.. the counter on the top is just sooo stressing DX'

The game is not for everybody and that's fine. There's turn-base strategy games that I may not like, yet haven't found yet. I like that XCOM kinda combines the action with the turn-base and the characters move naturally on the screen if that makes sense. Not the old-school Might & Magic or something like that.

worst is i heard is game over when it reaches zero, but i did love the character creation, i like to sit down with my brother and make the whole family sometimes.. only to see us die in a dumb way XD

I've made pretty much all my friends, co-worker friends and family and still had some alternatives. At some point I included mods with characters from Mass Effect in the game and they work just fine.

i really liked xcom but i always lost too, i just wish there was a way to remove the stress counter on top of xcom2 so maybe i can actually borrow it from the bf's library and play it for real!

You can with mods actually, in fact, I'll send you the link for it so you can check. I am veteran for the game so for me it's very easy to control the meter once you get into the game after a while. I had no issue, but for new-players this can be rather frustrating and more difficult than the previous installment.

Mods like Slower Avatar Project Progression or No Avatar Project if you wish to completely remove it. There's other ways to tweak the ini file, but that's more complicated and may break your game. Having the mods installed through the Workshop gives you the opportunity to do and undo if a game breaks without affecting the files or the game. Lastly, if you wish to just tweak it all together this mod can help as well to deal with the Avatar Project.

but it's the same with warhammer 40k mechanicus, a game i really enjoy but i just cannot deal with a constant timer put on me, i rather take my time and grind my soldiers to max before taking on the actual missions... i think that's also why i could never play majora's mask (maybe that damned moon falling towards you acompanied with the choppy emulation when i was younger is what rooted the incredible stress of games that have any kind of timer in them XD )

About Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus I don't know if the Workshop is available and contains any tweaking. But I can tell you that XCOM, 2K Games, Bethesda and other Paradox Entertainment games do have a large library of Workshop mods. Best to check and see and if that doesn't work, I'd suggest going for Nexus Mods which is my 2nd go to for mods of all kinds and contains a large variety of mods as well.

For instance Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is still in early access and doesn't have an opened workshop, so nexusmods is the best place to find mods that allows you to do whatever you wish. It's a bit more hassle, but it works well most of the time if you pay attention to the instructions.

thanks so much for the mods for xcom! next time i borrow the game i will make sure to have one of them installed!

i loved mount & blade so much, but i think my pc cannot run M&B2.. at least when i tried it it didn't run well and it was kinda depressing considering how many hours i sunk in the first mount and blade X3

and might and magic! i grew up with the 4th! it was so fun specially with the map editors, and how i hated i couldn't get actual allies >-<

now i kinda wanna see if i can run M&M5 , the music of the 4th game were so great, now i kinda also wanna get the soundtrack too X3

You're very welcome and if you wish to add me and ask me things about the game feel free to do so. I'm happy to discuss anything gaming related really. If I know the game as I've played it or have it in my wishlist I pretty much know about it a bit.

I'd suggest using GeForce Now if you can't afford to buy a PC for the moment as that can basically offer you support for even an Pentium 4 with a stable internet connection. I've only used it for experiment before my upgrade, and it worked pretty well with most demanding games.

and might and magic! i grew up with the 4th! it was so fun specially with the map editors, and how i hated i couldn't get actual allies >-<

My generation was Might and Magic 2. But I've enjoyed the 5th just as much I must say.

The System Requirements are as follows:

  • OS: Windows® 2000/XP (only)
  • Processor: Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon™ 1.5 GHz (Pentium® 4 2.4 GHz recommended)
  • Memory: 512 MB (1 GB recommended)
  • Graphics: DirectX® 9 compliant w/ 64MB RAM (128 MB recommended) (see supported list*)

I like to use Can you RUN it to make sure I fit the prescription if the system requirements confuse me.

im so weak towards nostalgia!

Same here, I am so happy when an old game receives love and gets a remake or remaster. My personal favorite one was Mafia 1, Mass Effect Trilogy (although not the most outdated), Final Fantasy (which I didn't play, but want to) and Resident Evil (which I didn't play, but I want to) and so much more. I wish Might & Magic: Heroes would get the same love.

i hope you are having a neat day ^^

Thank you and to you too, I am actually off to bed now. 😅

i THINK last time i ran Might and Magic 5 it ran well but .. it was too different from 4 and i was kinda angry at it i think XD

i have never actually played any mass effect, i think i do own one of the games, but i never really played it =T
not too fond of resident evil games(i did however play 7 because it reminded me of outlast which is a game i love) i was always more of a silent hill person -w-'

my always favourites will be the legacy of kain games ohh so many memories! i beat soul reaver 1 up to 5 to 6 times per day when i was a child! but i think i said that already X3. and of course warcraft 3 and the frozen throne, which got me into world of warcraft (but not on the official side of WoW due to money)
The very first game i deeply fell in love, and the only one i ever got a physical copy of that was 100% original was Machines: wired for war.
oh how i wish i still had the box and the cd.. i still miss that game so much but its so hard to make it run ;-;
Oh! and have you ever played black and white?

For sure, request accepted!

As time got by they changed from a series to another the graphics. I stopped after 5th, as I leaped from 2nd to 5th, so for me it was alright, but I noticed that the company has changed so much. In the 5th, there were old factions under a paid DLC and some were newer too. I liked it in a way because there was a graphical leap, although it resembled a lot Warcraft in my opinion at that time.

I've not played the most recent two and I'm pretty sad to see the series actually dying.

my always favourites will be the legacy of kain games ohh so many memories! i beat soul reaver 1 up to 5 to 6 times per day when i was a child! but i think i said that already X3.

I've got it and recently heard of it as I joined Steamgifts. I can't seem to tell you why I never heard of it before. I do wanna play it, as old as it is. Now that they have decided to sell the IP, we might get a remake. By the time I get to probably play it a remake might be on the way.

and of course warcraft 3 and the frozen throne, which got me into world of warcraft (but not on the official side of WoW due to money)

Loved it and played it a lot! I haven't played the remastered version as I've heard many negative thoughts about how badly they screwed it up. I've also played WoW on an non-official website. I had a friend who was an actual admin for a server and asked me to join, so I remember playing the game a little bit, until I got to level 105 or something like that. I don't know why I quit, but it must have been to the fact that the server was a little tweaked and a lot easier to level up than the official one and I didn't like that.

The very first game i deeply fell in love, and the only one i ever got a physical copy of that was 100% original was Machines: wired for war.
You can only get your hands on the game here.

Oh! and have you ever played black and white?

Sure did! I thought it was an excellent concept and to be frank, if they would have came with a newer one today there would be a lot more cool stuff you could do as a God in the game. Amazing game!

1, but sometimes it ends up being 3 because I don't have time, want to play a specific game I bought, or put a win on hold until I feel up to playing its prequels. I absolutely only enter giveaways for games I want to play. I hate clutter in my library. I already have so much of it that I want to dump my entire Steam library in the trash and start over. I have a few organized into categories, but one day I'll organize the rest... one day.

The idea of wasting my points on more clutter is not appealing to me in the least. Although I do understand and respect the thrill of collecting games, it's just not for me. I'm not a game collector nor are cards attractive to me. Most of my games have not been card-farmed yet. When I play them to categorize them, I usually play for an hour or two to decide, enough to drop most cards (with some exceptions that I hate on the spot). Yeah, I hope I'll finish organizing my library in this lifetime.

It's a mixed bag for me. I would choose all 3 poll options if I could but went with option 1. The games that I won that deserve to be played will all end up getting some love over time. Some I'm saving for a rainy day and others for when I finally catch up in the series when it's a later entry in a franchise. I do tend to prioritize ones with easy to obtain achievements and I don't enter (m)any GA for games that don't have achievements at all. That being said, I already own most of the games that I want and those that remain as joinable here are mostly either relatively cheap bundled games that I have skipped and "trash" keys obtained from other places (for tasks / free), I don't feel bad about collecting or farming the latter.

In the end, it's important that we acknowledge how we spend our time with the games that we win and the games that we purchased and that's why I ask those kinds of questions and not to actually make you necessarily feel guilty but rather grateful for all the games that you have and take more care into spending time and playing them.

Like a few others, I joined as a game collector. But after giving away a few games myself, I realized I'd rather people play games I spent money on to giveaway than just to collect. I know I can't control who wins or what they do, but I decided to apply that to myself.

However, I have... a really, really big backlog. But I have played almost every game I won (including the really bad ones...). Only ones I haven't played are the ones I won that are part of a series that I plan on playing in order really soon!

Now, I only enter giveaways for games I know I intend on playing (or games with multiple copies, just because).

I mainly enter for games that are on my wishlist.
The reason why I have a lot of games on wishlist is because I have zero experience with older games.
I played games like oblivion, skyrim, dark souls 1,2 etc for the first time just last year and the current year.
Also I have only a intel igpu so older games are simply better choice for me.
Unfortunately I didn't have much time playing my won games. I want to play and plan on playing them.
It's just my current life. I got my first pc when covid first started and I also had online class. So I was at home. My routine was simply join online class, finish class, play some games.
Though my library was much smaller then. Later everything sorta became normal and I was mostly away from home and my pc.
For example, I went home thursday, played hades, slay the spire on thrursday night and friday. I just returned to hostel from home today
Basically a hectic schedule.

That must have been some experience. I've never played any of the Dark Souls and I'm an old type of gamer. I've started gaming back in 1996. But my game tastes were different back then and a lot of the popular games I've replayed them like you in most recent years. Games like Dishounored, Dying Light, Metro and others.

You should never blame yourself for not having the time to play the games. We all have lives and we need to focus on that. Games should be a form of entertainment and a great source of distressing ourselves unless it's our job of course and we use that to make a living. Please don't take this thread in any way but just a way to reflect on your invested time and won games here and of course, the ones that you purchased.

I played and finished all the games I won here. I'm very selective about the games I enter, and lately I've been entering even fewer. No offense to you or anyone else but most people who "plan" to play all their won games are very poor at planning. I don't doubt their intentions, but a lot of people acquire much more than they reasonable have the time to play. Especially those who are in groups where it's easy to win, it's very tempting to enter for anything that looks interesting. That's just my opinion though, not calling anyone out, just something to think about maybe? Though I don't really expect to win anything anymore, I use the site more to interact with the forum and keep up with gaming news/deals.

I think you're very right and it's really hard to keep up with all the wins and bundles I end up buying. It's true that a lot of the chasing here isn't worth it if you don't plan to play the games.

I personally mix my won games with purchased games and at least once a month I play 1-2 games of each category. That way I do justice on both ends.

The intention is always to play won games, time permitting.
If they are "small" games like arcades or adventures they will be played pretty soon, if they are "big" like rpg most probably will start to fall behind, but surely I'll get there...
Falling behind usually depends on hype of the moment. Got some installed yet to be touched because new ones got in the way with hype+1

At the beginning I tried to win everything xD
Then I tried to win only games that I thought that were interesting.
Now I enter only the games that I would play pretty much right after winning xD
That somehow saves my backlog from growing.
there is problem If I win too much games in short period of time though

You sure did win a lot of games. Your wins count as half of my games on Steam. It's a lot if you think about it. Any good games you are really happy about?

One of my first wins was Dead Space :) Great game :)
Also Bastion, Rocketbirds, Monaco, Neon Chrome, Regions of ruin.

There were games that I wouldn't buy - but as they were given away I entered them anyway and was actually really happy to play them:
Interstellar Marines, Epistory, RIVE. IM was Early access and I never buy this kind of games - and It was great fun... but apparently it's abandoned now and never will be finished xD

Victor Vran is a fun game that I haven't finished because I started to play with a friend and after some hours of playing his PC died xD We were supposed to resume after hes got new PC... About 3 years passed and guess what xD Still have it on hard drive and will probably start from the beginning but not yet xD

Undertale - heard a lot of good things about it, but it's still in queue.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider - also in queue - I was waiting for upgrading my PC xD

Nongunz - absolute masterpiece! Finished game and kept playing to make it 100%... and then still played it until my time counter reached 70 hours xD Forcibly uninstalled because sense of guilt for not playing rest of the backlog kicked in xD Then devs gave me (and other owners of nongunz) new upgraded version of their game. Have it on my hd and I play it like twice a month xD

Prey - I thought it would run just fine, but It was actually unplayable on my current PC. Now I could play it, but still in queue xD

Metro Exodus - one of latest wins :) Played first part on steam, then won this one :) In order to play it I finished metro last light first (freebie from epic), and now I it's next in line... After I finish two other games I started to play xD I don't even have enough space on my pc to download it xD

There is a lot more but won't waste your time xD Sometimes I enter ga's for games that I know that would be bad and It's so bad that it's good xD Or it's actually good xD

Dead Space is one of the only horror games I've played and considered to be my favorite games ever. For sure was worth it. I don't know much about the others, but I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Sometimes just having it for free is enough to see if it was worth it or not. I agree that early access games are double blade thing.

It is inspired by Diablo or it's just the first impression? I have it in my library too.

Undertale - heard a lot of good things about it, but it's still in queue.

Same, didn't play it yet.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider - also in queue - I was waiting for upgrading my PC xD

Played and loved Dishonored. I didn't go with chaos in first run. It seemed to easy. I enjoy stealth games.

Nongunz - absolute masterpiece! Never heard of it, but now I do. I'll wishlist it, just in case I get it, I'll let you know what was my thought with it, but you can expect waiting a while for it. 🤣

Prey - I thought it would run just fine, but It was actually unplayable on my current PC. Now I could play it, but still in queue xD

I've played all three of them to 100%. I loved them to pits. Especially the 3rd, but I hated the voice-acting. It felt that it needed more work on that department.

Had that with Blood Knights. It was a hilarious game, especially in the cinematic and story. Very poorly written and acted.

Technically speaking -everything that's isometric and arpg is inspired by diablo xD

Yes, I want to xD One day for sure :)

but I hated the voice-acting.

What was your language settings? For some reason I'm used to play STALKER in russian + subtitles and played metroseries in the same way xD And I liked voice acting.

That's one of my sg wins - still in backlog though xD

Played it in English. I've tried it in Russian too for the immersion, but didn't feel the same when first two I've played them in English as well.

I try to play most of them, but apparently while I have thousands of hidden games, buy bundles and have a HB choice, I still manage to find things I want to win. Then sometimes I win them and some of them are just waiting there...
Now with a child, I try my best to add some gaming time in the between and I enter mostly for games I would play almost immediately.
At the same time, I try to go through my want to play list that I acquired on my own.
Apparently getting older just makes it more difficult to play. Until I suppose you hit the retirement date...

I don't have a child, but I can imagine how difficult it gets as it's not like an pet that you can leave around to roam. You don't have the same time.

All in all, how much time for games do you get?

Apparently getting older just makes it more difficult to play. Until I suppose you hit the retirement date...

I wonder if retiring makes up for all the hoarded games I keep buying and winning. 🤣 All I need is 30 years of gaming or so to get my library clear to 100%. Although I can't see myself playing games when I'm 90 years old. 🤣

Even then I will still dont want to play some stuff!

I would say that I have 1 hour per day, but I never spent it in gaming completely.
Usually, I just chill or do some work around the house.
I do not know why we were so eager to grow up. There is always some shit to do...

You can say that again. During my 14 to 18 years old period it was the most gaming fruitful I should say. You don't pay for anything and all you worry about is your school and grades. I had so much time to play back then it's crazy. I have now too, but I rather use some of it wisely.

I only enter wishlisted games.
The thing is 1) I don't have much time to play (only weekends) 2) I play other games 3) I'm waiting more decent prices to buy a new PC for some on my games (won or not). All this mixed I won't play some games I've won here before quite a long time.

I enter for playing, ofcourse!
... but at the beginning I made the mistake to enter for everything that looked interesting, and I regret few wins... I will still play them at one point, but my OCD with 100% achievements it's not helping the progress...

I'm in the same boat like you. I have started having the tendency to go for 100% Achievements goals and I only don't do it if the game doesn't resonate with me or it's a way too long experience, that robs me for hundreds of hours of playing something I enjoy.

^^ This. I never entered for games that didn't look interesting, but I wasn't selective enough and regret several wins. And then becoming OCD with completionism made it that I couldn't (well, wouldn't) play some of those wins. Now I'm mostly inactive and barely enter for anything (2 entries in 2022).

I don't believe the poll results at all. I really wish it were true.
I understand there must be many who want to play their wins but just are not able to due to IRL reasons. But I doubt 76% of SG members actually plan on playing their wins. It must be more like 25%, or lower.

I think it's quite likely to be accurate tbh. You have to remember that less than 0.001% of all SG users have voted here, and most of those that have are active members on SG. I think that the silent majority do not play their wins, but i'd imagine a decent chunk of the vocal forum minority do :)

That's true. Well thought! I would like to remark that it's admirable that some people voted honestly other things they like to do. In the end, it's okay, it doesn't matter what one does with their wins, but we do all appreciate when people play and enjoy the games we give away.

That's maybe because you measure the actual fact with the wishing part. That's what makes the difference. There's a long journey to go from wanting to doing. And as you've mentioned real-life issues or simply a massive backlog that makes things difficult for the player to get or cover.

I agree, but I am quite certain that a lot of the accounts (bots included) are here just for farming cards, reselling keys, +1s, etc.

Yes, but asides from Counter Strike, where else you can win keys?

What? I am talking about steam keys. Reselling them on the grey market. Or even regifting them here on SG.

I agree with you. Poll isn't really matching the cases I have been seeing. I guess it is the "I will play them eventually" part, which I consider a lie people keep telling themselves. People are having huge backlogs that would take years to play through. If one has huge backlog, which just keeps growing every year, the situation will not magically change. The more likely result is that, no, you will not ever play most of those games. You likely won't even play minority of the games you own. But hoarding is fun, I guess?

Personally I don't have anything against collectors. Each of us has hobbies, nothing wrong with that. It just feel like a bummer when I see people wishing to win a game they wanted to play end up in someone else's collection, never to be played, never to be even installed. You don't even remember you own it. Just for that magical +1. And as a cherry on top: "I'll play it eventually." No you won't. Seems I am bitter on this topic.

Agreed. I don't have anything against them too. I just wanted to point out that majority of the users here fall in that category.

There's nothing better than getting a message from one of your winners letting you know they enjoyed the game they won from you. So that's what I try to do. 😊
I'm also very picky with the giveaways I enter - I only go for the games I actually want to play. 🙂

I think about doing that sometimes, but seeing how easily people get annoyed and BL you here, I avoid doing that, specially when I don't know the GA creator at all.
I believe I have done this only, that too only because I had talked to the GA creator before.

I suppose my numbers speaks slightly against me as a collector. ^^ Maybe I am, as I like to collect games, but I do so only with the intention to play them. All games I have I want to play one day. Some of them even again and again, cough Mass Effect cough.
I am not jumping on every game I see, even for free. If it isn't up to my taste I will let it slip by. Also I enter for games on my wishlist or for games that seems interesting to me. Still some wins left to play, but I am slowly getting there. ^^

There's nothing wrong in wanting to collect the games. I do it too, for the games I used to play as a kid. I want to have them to somewhat indicate I've played it before and that I enjoyed it.

I now generally only enter for things that I have some interest in playing, though when I first joined I entered everything I could just to see if it was real, haha.

That said, I am a collector by nature so I have entered for a few objectively low quality games just because they were removed from the Steam store. I also have way too many games at this point, so there are several games I paid full price for myself that I haven't even played yet :)
